Is the Ipod/USB option necessary if you already have 2009 Idrive?
i am ordering the car. anyways, I intend to play songs with Mp3 and was wondering if the Ipod/USB is necessary? Since i heard there are two usb ports, one in the glove box that you can upload songs onto the internal hard disk drive? so, woudl that defeat the purpose of me spending money to buy that option? thanks |

Or you can just put a CD in and rip it right there in the car. Takes about 10 mins.
Puts it straight onto the hard drive. I prefer using a memory stick.

The USB port under the armrest option can play iPods as well as any MP3 player/stick with USB control. Songs will be played at their original format/speed and in their original order format (playlists). My opinion is, get the iPod/USB option. |

6FL is half the reason to have Idrive. You can use the screen to control your external music sources. Its a great combination.
And, to be honest, if I had to chose between 6FL and Idrive, I'd go with 6FL.

The file formats supported for playback from the harddrive are more limited than playback from USB drives on 6FL. For example, both will play MP3, but only 6FL will play PCM WAV or WMA Lossless. I prefer 6FL with a large USB Flash Drive with files in WMA Lossless format. This gives the best sound quality (playing from an iPod uses analog line out for playback). You want 6FL & 6NF for best playback flexibility, and iDrive for best interface to the music. If all you have are mp3 files, and 12GB is enough, iDrive alone would be just fine. But , in a year, 128GB USB Flash Drives will be $100, and 6FL will let you use that. I have a 16GB flash drive in 6FL and basically don't even use the hard drive. It's basically more convenient this way to update my music, and 12GB isn't enough for me. Add lack of lossless codec support on the hard drive, and it's no longer useful to me... |

Get the option it's worth it. Help's with resale too; a must for the majority.
I use the IPOD and control it through the I-Drive. This allows me to take my IPOD into every car I have and plug and play. I do not mess with the hard drive storage much a, few CD's are loaded in case I leave the IPOD in the other car.
