Has dealer used wrong oil?

Just had an oil, filter and micro filter first service at the dealers (18 minutes and £263!!!) - what a rip off!!!

Went round to parts to get some top up oil and they insisted that Mobil 1 0-40w is the correct oil that BMW now recommend.


Is this right ????

whichever company is involved most with BMW in Motorsport will usually be the oil the dealer recommends. As BMW's F1 team are no longer involved with Castrol then they will not be recommended. I understand that Petronas provide the lubricants though.

You can use any oil as long as its LL04 approved.

This includes Castrol 5w30, Selenia 5w30 and also a mobil 1 oil.


(I can get you selenia cheap if you wish)

18 minutes are you sure it wasn't the BMW pit crew?

I had a quick look for Mobil 1 oil and found this below, I nearly had a heart attack!

Then I realised it was for 4 bottles! Plank!

Yes 18 minutes start to finish. Had a cup of coffee, booted laptop and the car was back!!

Sure they billed me for 45min labour!

This has been extensively covered in other posts, but on my last service, I supplied the Oil (Castrol Edge TD) - the oil cost £85, but supplying it myself meant that the labour (and including the filter) was £88

Bloody hell, what a rush! Did they just suck the oil out of the sump and leave all the crud at the bottom? Was the oil up to temperature?

These dealers are under so much pressure to meet targets and pay back the massive debt taken on to build flash new premises, it's no wonder why some of the servicing is so poor as it's so rushed.

At least they didn't wash it with a broom

18 minutes for a service and >£250 is a bloody rip off. They've got you by the balls really as you are within warranty.

Surely with block exemption legislation, you could have taken it anywhere (at greatly reduced cost) and used BMW parts........but then you wouldn't have that stamp in your book.......

took mine to H+C bmw specialists in maidstone kent, supplied the oil £90 from halfords, cost me £100 labour including filter and brake fluid change, bargain!

You can take it anywhere, it BS if they tell you otherwise, your warranty will be fine.

You don't even have to use BMW parts, only parts which meet the manufacturers specification.

The only problem is that people don't like buying fancy cars cars without Full Dealer History, so the drop in used value caused by non-dealer history will cost you far more than paying the extra for the dealer to service it!

So they have got you by the balls in a round about way.... but its the comsumers fault for perpetuating the problem of non dealer history.

We can't moan about dealer prices on one hand, but then say 'I won't buy a car without FDSH' on the other!

Indeed - I'd rather see a fistful of (competant) independant service garage invoices than just the bare minimum dealer invoices........aslong as genuine parts & LL04 oil etc were used. Using genuine parts is piece of mind - take brake pads for example - use Mintex pads etc and you will be plauged with squeal/dust etc.
