I have a feeling this is the trend for Europe where they already use small 4 cylinder in addition to the 6 cylinder motors. A BMW in America with a 3 cylinder will most likely not happen for a long, long time.

The world is more than just the United States And yes, Europe is on that part quite innovative; But the American people are asking for smaller more economical cars. so I think it could happen soon. also because it goes all the way up to the x25i. Look what Ford is doing with the Ford Ka, the smallest car from the brand is going to the states, like Smart, Mini,... |

There's nothings sad about it. If BMW makes 1.8T inline4 turbo with 300+ horsepower, then yeah - this is technology advancement.
We all know that inline4 with turbo will be coming in the U.S. It'll be more efficient and still performs well. I'm sure BMW doesn't want to trail Audi in this. Just because there are more options on the low end doesn't mean the high end ones will go away. BMW now has the V12 with twin turbo.

X20i --- 241 horses from 3 cylinders/1375cc is more than the horses my 325 gets out of 6 cylinders and twice the displacement. Pretty impressive.

This also goes inline with the V5 turbos for larger models. Footie, Like I have said before- BMW has been working on a lot of radical motors, and drive trains lately. The 3 cylinders will not only feature a turbo but an electric motor, the soon to be released 7 series hybrid will not be a two-mode (can't run just on electric) but feature the electric motor as a "boost". The X6 will be a two mode hybrid. So a 3 cylinder with a turbo and electric motor will put out the same as a six with MUCH greater efficiency, oh and added torque. Lots of new stuff coming...

i highly doubt this will be applicable in the States. They make cars with smaller engines in other countries.

I have driven the 1985 Chevy Sprint (the Geo Metro's predecessor) and 3 cylinder is the wave of the future! These engines sound ok, doubt they will come to America anytime soon though. The real question is why can't any company other than Lotus get their cars back down to a normal weight. I want a car that weighs less than 3k lbs and doesn't look like a toy. My first car was a 1993 Honda Accord and it weighed 2,800 lbs, why is that impossible now? Is there really 1,000 lbs of added safety gear neccessary?
