Palm Pre Compatible?
Does anyone know if the new Palm Pre is compatible with a 2008 335? My Pre should be here early next week.

Walt Mossberg of the Wall St. Journal reviewed the Pre this week, and, among other things, mentioned that the Pre connected to his car via Bluetooth without a problem. However, it would not load the phonebook. Unfortunately, he neglected to say what kind of car he has, so it's a shot in the dark. (That's what return policies are for )

Interesting. I should have it by midweek. I'll post a review next weekend.

I picked my Pre up on Saturday morning.
I have it synchronized with my 335i coupe (my 07). I had an issue when trying to pair it that it only gave me a couple seconds to type in my passkey before the pre reported "pairing failed". I ended up making a 2 digit passkey to try to put it in real fast - which actually worked. Once it was paired, I tried the voice dial which worked perfectly (ie. "dial number 5555555"). HOWEVER, my contacts are NOT synchronizing. After that wasn't working - I tried deleting all of the BT profiles on my car - and re-paring the pre. Same result - the contacts won't transfer. When I click on the "A-Z" button to get the list of contacts, I get a "please wait...." message from the car, and a few seconds later it just returns to the phone menu. SO... it "somewhat" works is the answer. I tried updating my pre to the new 1.0.2 firmware as well, which didn't change anything. -Scott |

It should be as long as it has bluetooth and can transfer contacts.

"Should Be" is correct "Is" is not correct.
I've tried playing with a few things, and ended up re-syncing my contacts back into the car from my old windows-mobile phone, which worked like a champ. I *love* the palm pre - it's been a great phone and lots of fun over the last few days - but it seems to just not play nice with the contacts transfer on the BMW. Since the car recognizes and pairs with it - I'm hoping it will just be a software issue that can/will be fixed. If anyone else has a pre and gets it to work please post here - I'd like to know a way to get it working. FWIW, my pre is synchronized with our company exchange server - so my contacts come from there. Not sure if that may have an effect on this... _Scott |

I bought the Palm Pre yesterday and returned it today for two reasons.
1. It would not load the contacts into my 325xi bluetooth (although it did work over the speakers and I could hang up and manually dial, my local dealership said not to use it until they updated the software or it could cause my car's computer to malfunction). 2. It would not sync up with my work email like promised. Great phone, unless you're a traveling businessman. Which is what these smartphones were designed for in the first place, right? |

**FIXED**
I don't know how many really geeky people there are here on e90post - but for those who like to be on the "cutting edge" - it is possible to fix the pre's bluetooth to work with your bmw. I'm working on getting this fix out via the proper channels (ie. palm corporate) - but not sure if / how long it will take to get out that way. Some may have noticed: http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/10/w...d-to-palm-pre/ Which was what I was working on last night (I'm scm6079 if you look at the pic)-- tonight I worked on the bluetooth issue.... and am happy to report that I have it working with my car now. -Scott |

I take it the "fix" isn't something the regular end user can do. Were you able to hack getting the OBEX profile functionality working?

I can pair no problem with my Pre. Scott, was it a big deal to get root on the Pre? I am a computer guy by trade and am pretty comfortable with unix but I haven't gone there yet with my new phone. I have been waiting for a bit to see how it goes.
I love my Pre though, almost as much as my bimmer!

I just picked up a pre last night and could not get it to pair with my 08 335i. When the palm asks for the pin do I enter the same # that the device says? I'm confuzed about the pin# and that may be my issue.
On another note. I have noticed that when in the bluetooth mode on the phone, if I leave it trying to pair it shuts down and I have to reboot. This also has happened going through the help screen as well. Anyone else experiancing these issues? |

Has anyone tried to store music on the device and connect via USB to the BMW - Does the BMW recognize and play the MP3s?
I'm living through all of you until next week. There was a delay in shipping mine...

I got my Pre on launch day - got in my car, deleted my old WinMo phone that was in my 08 335xi and paired the Pre without a hiccup. Contacts loaded and all.
I have a lot of contacts so when you pull up the A-Z menu the first time, it takes a bit to load. btw - the Pre rocks the cazbah! |

hmmm I'l have to give it longer and see if i can get my contacts to load.
On anther thought I wish when in calander mode it would let me change months with a left or right swipe of the finger instead of having to use the drop down menu, or am I misssing something? |

scm6079, I read your recent post regarding the fix you are working on to allow the Pre to transfer contacts to the BMW's Bluetooth system. I have an '07 6 series and the contacts from my new Pre will not upload to my car. Very frustrating, especially since I have gotten used to using the voice control feature to place calls by simply stating the person's name rather than having to remember their phone number. If you have any suggestions, I'd be extremely grateful. |

Howdy all,
I had the same problem as many others on my '06 330i (I don't know what E number it is - how do you find that out?), where I could use my Pre, but the phone book didnt sync. I tried pairing a couple of times but to no avail, and was going to patiently wait until a fix came along, but today my bluetooth wouldn't enable on the Pre so I had to do a soft reset (ie, hit the power button and then turn the ringer switch on and off a few times). After that my bluetooth came back on, and I thought I'd check to see if the phone book worked. Low and behold it did. So, other's out there might want to try doing a soft reset after successfully pairing the Pre to the bimmer. baldric (running WebOS 1.02) |

I got my Pre earlier this week and have had no problems connecting it with my 2008 e92.
I'm pleased with the phone so far. Integration with my enterprise exchange server has been fantastic. Location based applications are nice. My only complaint so far as been a little slow on the response time.

You know what really sucks about the Pre. You can't use it as a USB Drive AND a phone at the same time. I thought I had a single solution so I could keep my iPod out of the car. OH well. Hopefully there will be a hack for that soon.
