Question Stoopid Battery Question

Okay, I'm not a mechanic at all, but how the h... do you replace the battery? 2006 325 xi...

What is the red wiring component on top of the battery? How do you get it off of the battery? And what do you do with the wires so you can lift the battery out?

It seems to me that it is wired so tight there is no where to go with the cables once you figure out how to get that thing unclamped from the battery...

Don't be hard on yourself. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and for the life of me I couldn't figure it out either.
