Exclamation WARNING: PETROL STATION CAR WASH v/s Engine Warning light!!!

Right, decided to take the car for a wash today as it was sunny!!!
took it to the local shell petrol station for a self car wash...was aiming the high pressure hose on the kidney grills and didn't realise water was being directed in the engine!!!

On my way home, got an engine warning light (amber) it looks ,like a "tap" with half of the picture shaded....had a look at my handbook and it says " full engine power is no longer available"

is it because water got into my engine?

damn it!!!!...i shud have left it dirty!!!....

and i have my oil service due aswell!!!!.....

please help and advice!!! ...i felt so "weak" with my car running on low power!!!...i felt heavy and impotent!!!....

please help!!! ...Tony where r u mate??????????.....

I hate having those warning lights!!!

Engine bays get jet washed when they are cleaned, think it just sounds like a coincidence.

Have you been out in it again?

Just went out for a drive,

engine warning light is gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but the car is behaving a bit weird....

in D mode, normally when i use the paddle to shift gears, it normally goes back to D if I don't use it for a few secs and it doesn't keep the revs high i.e stays in gear for a short time and then goes up a gear...

Now in D mode, its actually staying in gear for a long time and it keeps reving high....normally it does this only in M or DS mode....but now in D mode its keeping the revs high when i press the paddleshift and it doesn't return to D mode as quickly as it should....

so weird....i will drive to work tomorow and see how it behaves....

Give it a chance to dry out - open the bonnet and leave it open.

Chances are you'll be fine.

Thats what happened with mine, i was offshore when the light came on first and the missus mentioned it to me, i told her to not drive unless it was really necessary, she drove it twice each journey about 5 miles after and the light stayed of, it then came on when i got home after another 5 miles for about 2 miles then went out again, phoned BMW emerg. services and they told me it was fine to drive until i could get it to the dealer, so on that i drove it home, about 1 mile from the house it changed to red and it had to be transported to the dealer on a lorry ................. then the 5 day wait with a renault megan diesel as replacement......not fun at all.

Seems a bit of a coincidence that the engine light came on just after the jet wash. Doesn't really make much sense, unless you got water right up into the air intake. You might just have to let the car dry out. If water got into the airbox, then the filter will be clogged and the engine will cut power as there isn't enough air going to the engine. You might need to take the air filter out and replace it - on the 335i it's easy as the top of the airbox just unclips. The airbox is the big rectangular plastic box that is right next to the engine cover on the right hand side.

This has just happened to me! i have a 335i on an 07 plate, the only difference being that i don't use Petrol station car washes! At first the car had trouble starting, it could take a couple of attempts to start it, then yesterday when it eventually started the 'engine fault' light came on and the car decided to rev itself (with no help from me!) to about 5,000 revs and a really strong and rich fuel smell was obvious. the only thing i can think may be causing it is low oil level, it's due an engine service in 1200 miles. Has anyone else had an engine fault alert that's related to something similar?

This is so annoying!!!!.....bloody engine warning light came on this morning when i was on the motorway!!!...same one, (amber) and loss of power....

this is so annoying!!!!....paying so much money for these cars including servicing costs, and every bloody minute there is some bloody warning light! What is wrong with modern technology!!!???

Had a peugeot 406 for 4 years and I treated it like shit, not once I've had a problem with it....I don't even service it properly....I think the last oil change was about 2 years ago...I used to rev it high even on cold...travel to Bath from London every month and done loads miles "in town driving" (ok it doesn't have 306bhp....) not a singlwe issue...the only stuff i done to it was to change the brake pads and disk and spark plugs....other than that....nothing!!!!....and i have covered 40k miles, raped the engine on each occassion...and still shes going strong....

Not impressed with BMW....and I only bought it in February from a BMW Dealership....

Now I booked it to BMW battersea for thurs and will need to find out what is wrong and if covered by warranty...

That's really going to help As someone who has worked in the field, having somebody come in and lie/omit/obfuscate about what happened prior to the fault appearing just F**KS it up for everybody involved in trying to determine why it happened.

I've lost track of the times a customer has "adjusted/bodged/replaced/knackered" an associated part but has sworn blind to us they never touched anything. Just wastes everybodies time ...

Take it in - tell the full story. Give them the same info you gave here. At least give them an honest chance to fix it before getting a petted lip.

D.

Now had 4 335i's and power washed them all even the grills and never had a problem. Used the dirt blaster lance on all of them.

I've been put off buying 335d's! I've heard they've all been ragged to death at the pod and the 'ring.
