Skiing: Helmet or none?

I've been skiing for over 20 years now and have never had any serious accidents except for when I dislocated my shoulder from a bad fall. This year I'm seriously contemplating getting a helmet since I dont think I would enjoy my head cracking on some ice, rocks or a tree. It seems the norm for everyone to wear a helmet when biking but why not skiing? I think its not cool to have your melon split open on a side of a mountain.

That's probably a good idea for me. The last time I skiied was the first time in a long time...and I almost crashed into a tree.

ahhhh, sking, haven't done that for many many years....since grade school actually. I have always disliked and scared of going on the lifts, espically alone and it STOPPED in the middle of it!!!!! I had to close my eyes until it reached to the top....

memories.....

I definitely agree with wearing a helmet for skiing. I've also been skiing about 20 or so years and started wearing a helmet a couple years ago. Besides being safer, I find it much more comfortable than a hat.

I've been snowboarding for 17 or so years and have been fortunate to have only broken my ankle (other then minor bumps and bruises). I've never worn a helmet and will continue that way. It sounds wierd, but after years of going without one, I feel top-heavy and off balance when I put on a helmet.

This debate always seems like the same as the "seatbelt or not debate". I've been driving for 10 years and never been in an accident, therefor I don't need to wear a seatbelt? I guess with skiing it depends somewhat on how aggressively you ski though. If you stay on the greens all day you probably don't really need a helmet. If you frequent the diamonds and double diamonds, it might just be a good idea.

I was just thinking about this recently. Everyone does less extreme sports and recreation, and wearing helmets is a no brainer. I used to ski downhill competitively and was required to wear a helmet. I think when I have kids, and get them started, I will most likely buy them for the whole fam.

I'm more worried about the other out of control nuts on the hill than whether I extreme ski or not. Last winter I saw this kid try to jump over some woman but instead took out a part of her scalp!
