1st crank of the day, no start, second crank, no problem

Anyone have this issue? Thinking it might be the spark plugs?

I know the long crank is usually attributed to hpfp...but I could repeat this every day, and unless its the very first cold start of the day, I dont have this problem. (car also runs fine once started, done 6th gear 60mph pulls etc to try to strain hpfp...2nd gear pulls, no probs, smooth)

First start of the day, long crank, and crank, and no start.

hit button, and try 1 more time, instant turn over.

Any ideas?

details:
1) put key in, depress clutch, hit start button, car cranks endless until I hit the button and it stops
2) depress clutch and hit button again, instant start
3) no limp modes, no CELs
4) car drives smooth once started
5) occurs ONLY on the very first cold start of the day

im almost to the point where u are.. a week or so ago i had to hit the button cause i didnt want to burn up my starter motor..

but now every day i have similar symptoms.. first start of the day it takes about 5-10 secs.. after that its about 1-2 secs.. i had codes thrown previously.. 3 actually for the HPFP.. but have yet to get them back. and im waiting for them so i can go see the dealer.. since i cleared them.

but ya.. your not the only one.. dont know what it could be other then the pump.. havent checked my plugs ever and im close to 30k.

most likely its just the stupid pump.

I feel like it might be the plugs? Seems to run just fine once started? Ive tried to induce strain on the pump, car runs perfect. Any second start and its instant, very odd. Most odd to me because I can replicate it every day, same pattern.

I left my car over the weekend for 4 days, thats when I got the first non-start endless crank, before this it was longer and longer crank...

seems the longer the car sits, the longer the first crank, but the rest of the day it operates perfect...very very odd

so I have had two HPFP and brought my car to Tulley in NH this time since I was getting Limp Mode everytime I got over 120 or really got into the gas and they replaced the LPFP this time and I still have long cranks.... all of my plugs were changed at 19k on have 28K on the car now I am wondering what the heck it is starting to bug me now.
car is running a bit stronger since the LPFP but still not 100% any ideas?
I want to get all of this fixed so I can throw on my mods

Some others posted that one of the latest issues noticed with the HPFP failures is that the pump itself may not be failing but rather some pressure sensor located in or nearby this pump. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...or#post5797351

I saw that as well... I'm really curious what is causing this because it has been doing it consistently for 3 weeks straight. It's only on the first start of the day... after it has been started once it starts up right away and shows no problems under high loads etc.

same exact problem, went to dealer they replaced my starter and it was fine for a few days then went back to normal. i think it has to do with my coils on the cylinders. They replaced a couple cylinders a while ago, and the problem was fixed and now i think its time for the other cylinders.

I had the same problem: First start of the day, long crank but that was it and only then it was a handful of times only. Took the car in for oil and coolant service and told them about the long crank. They suggested replacing the battery so I did this. Problem has actually been worse since then! A few times I thought I would be walking home! I stopped driving it and have been using the Harley instead until I can get the car back in for service this Friday.

We'll see I guess.

BTW, I purchased the car new in 2005 and it now has a little over 69,000 miles on it. Other than this problem, it runs without a flaw!

Fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced (each part at a cost of about $240) for a total cost of $904. Picked the car up Friday (2 days ago) with no problems starting. When I went to drive it late this afternoon however, it gave a long crank again! The car has been out of warranty for a while so I have not been taking it to the BMW dealership for service. I wonder if perhaps I should now? Your thoughts are welcome.

Mine does this too. First start takes a good 5 seconds to turn over, then it does seem better throughout the day. I have 2000 miles on the car and it pretty much started when I first got it.

It has to be the battery, i am having the same exact symptoms. I also tried to add an amp to the car and now the amp is cutting off for low voltage.

I originally thought the same thing and suggested this to the service tech. They agreed it might be the battery so they replaced it for around $100. However the problem only got worse! Took it back and that's when they came back with the fuel pump being bad. I don't know if they tested the old battery to see if it was bad...perhaps they just agreed with me and decided after 4.5 years the battery should be replaced. Then again perhaps I should not have suggested anything and let them figure it out. Oh well.
