Question Thoughts - USB Charger Mod

I was initially looking at carrying out the "Happy Robot Mod", ie adding the twin cigar lighter sockets to the rear, via the part from BMW, however thinking about it, I think I would prefer to add 2 USB ports for charging to the rear ?

That way things like DS's, PS2's, Mobiles, etc, etc ... can all be charged with the standard supplied USB Charging cables provided with the item.

One option is to add the above, and then buy 2 of the Stubby Belkin USB adaptors to put in there.

The other option, and my prefered option would be to add 2 USB ports, direct into the Face plate, with a convertor behind to drop them down to the 5v mark, which is required.

My problem is I can not find any USB Ports that are designed to be fitted like this, only USB / Cigar Lighter adaptors.

Anyone seen anything like this at all anywhere?

Or I "could" use a couple of USB Ports from an old desktop computer.

It also makes me wonder why they still produce new cars with ashtrays, and cigar lighter sockets ?

Who smokes and uses their ashtrays, and uses the lighter to light their Cigs anyway ?

eg, the front cigar lighter on the E90, could quite easily be replaced by 2 USB sockets, in the same amount of space, and customers would then not need to buy Car chargers extra for each item ..... Bizarre !!

Had a closer look, and its not that good looking for a car, it looks too industrial, will keep looking around though.

Otherwise I may look at mounting the Belkin adaptors direct to the face plate, if I can make them secure and sit flush?
