2007 BMW Z4 to a 2010 VW GTI?
Hey guys,
I currently have a Z4 that will be coming off of lease at about the end of the year. I was looking at the new gti tonight, and i think i am in love. The car is so well built and equipt. The salesperson gave me a good deal on it, and it's something I really am considering. What do you guys think? Obviously, the cars are in a different classes..for example rwd vs. fwd, but how do they compare? (handling, speed, and just overall daily driving). |

You should really check my review of the new MkVI GTi. It's like 2-4 pages back I can't remember.
Overall it's a great car. I just can't do FWD. It's almost too competent for its own good, so when you push it hard you don't get as much satisfaction as you'd expect. It's a brilliant all-rounder though, and it looks sharp in that classic sense.

Man, $28+, those things are getting up there these days. Does look like a very nice car though.

Speed wise, 60 and 100 take about 6 and 15 seconds respectively and we get 33mpg (imp gals) as the average. |

open road vw on staten island
I've been telling my friends about the idea of the gti, and i'm getting a lot of negativity towardes it. "I shouldn't be going from a bmw roadster to a volkswagen hatchback." |

I take it from your original post that you have driven the car and love it. I'm on my third one and this latest is by far the best, it's built as well as any Audi or BMW I've owned and can be equipped with all the extras common with those two, the Dynaudio sound system is amazing when you consider there's no sub, loads of bass and a great sound stage. I would personally pick the DSG, mainly because it copes best with the lag from the turbo engine. |

I've had a VW Golf GTI VR6 for 2 years before going BMW. It was always at the dealership for repairs. Everything was breaking apart. I may have had bad luck and got a lemon but they are known for poor reliability. VW never again.

the new VW's are more reliable than the older ones .
My MKV has been problem-free for the past 2.5 yrs I had it. -however, the DSG in the MKV GTI has been known to have a PRNDS problem...(see golfmkv.com for more details on this) I myself have been looking at a MKVI GTI to replaced my MKV Rabbit. I recently test drove one last week, DSG 5-door carbon grey (looks awesome in pics and even more so in person) GTI. Having a 335i as well, the speed of the GTI is not 'impressive' comparatively, but It's definitely adequate and is no slouch. As a DD, the GTI is definitely the best value in its' class. The car is pretty quiet when just driving normally, but when you go WOT, the sound of the exhaust is actually pretty intoxicating. The handling is also pretty good for a FWD, with the MKVI's improvements over the MKV chassis, it feels stiffer, and takes the turns a bit better, with suspension upgrades/sways/etc the car will handle on rails. The interior is awesome (might i say, even better than the e90 interior), and feels pretty luxurious inside like an Audi. The steering wheel is thick, and feels really nice and has a flat bottom. The touch screen radio is pretty cool as well, and the dynaudio is a cheap upgrade as well, but have heard from other forums that it is a big difference over stock (the one i test drove did not have this option). Because the MKVI GTI uses the same 2.0TSI engine from MKV, lots of upgrades (chip/intercooler/intake/etc) are available. overall: The MKVI GTI is definitely a great car, whether or not you should switch depends on how you like it...so you should definitely go for a test drive before you decide . It's just too bad the lease programs in Canada for the new GTI sucks...i was quoted around 650/month (tax-in) for a 36 month lease with 1150 due on delivery. For that price, i could add another 50 a month and pick up another 335i. |

Just to correct you on something. The MkVI doesn't use the same engine as the MkV, it's totally new even though capacity and torque is the same.
As for the DSG, I have also known of faults with them, control units being replaced among others, though personally I had 14 months problem free with one so maybe I was lucky. Another difference is the eLSD that's fitted now, definitely helps getting the power down exiting corners yet is torque steer free. Also worth speccing is the adaptive suspension, probably the best choice of setting by any of it's type. Comfort, normal and sport all are different and perfectly match it's mode. |

I would take a well equiped GTI over a Z4 any day. I was actually thinking about a r32 or something as a daily/winter car once my lease is up.

The steering wheel and seats are arguably better. Materials aren't as good (just noting for comparison). I would need a 6MT just because I'd need more excitement in the drive.

In Canada, the tech package comes with NAV, media device interface, and Dynaudio which is a pretty good deal @ $2000 CAD i was hoping there would be a 6mt to test drive too since thats what i would get |

I can't get my head round this, the new engine has better economy and better emissions, two things that California would be crying out for. Most strange.

Another thing, stick with the cloth trim, it's the unique part of the GTI and a tradition that goes back to the Mk1, apart from that it looks so much better than the leather trim. |
