Question about digital gas reading.

for example when the miles left say 400 or whatever is the car stating that 400miles are left of highway miles or city miles? The reason i ask is because it will say 400miles left and ill drive like 40 city miles and its all the way down to 300miles. Please let me know, thanks in advance.

It varies depending on your driving and average MPG.

right. what you see on the screen is based on how you're driving at the time, so the mileage will decrease rapidly if you're doing stop/start in traffic or driving hard, and increase if you're doing a steady 55 on an interstate.

...and the screens just for fun. You should be staring at your gas gauge and maybe the average MPG.

yea don't trust the gauge at all because most times, my miles left actually increases by 40 miles whenever I drive on the freeway. My car magically puts in more gas into my car the more I drive it Sometimes when I fill up, it will read 450, and sometimes it will read 365. If anything, I'd trust the needle gauge since that's way more accurate.

It's not a measure of how much gas is left in the tank. It's an estimate of how many miles you can expect to be able to drive with the remaining amount gas, according to your current driving style.

It's like your laptop battery being at 50%, and it shows you have 1 and a half hours left when you're watching a video and then 2 hours left if you stop watching the video only browse the web. Your laptop didn't suddenly become more charged. It's just that the amount of time that 50% battery will last you will vary depending on how you use it.

The miles left is a calculation based on the average MPG the car is running for tha past 18 miles. In other words, it updates the miles remaining estimate every 18 miles. As the mile remaining counts down, it triggers a low gas warning at 51 miles then again at 31 miles. Once you're down at 31 miles remaining it's pretty accurate.

As people already said. It adjusts to the driving conditions. If you drive through a long neighborhood staying in lets say 2nd gear doing 25mph, you'll see it drop. But when you get on the highway, you'll add more mileage. Damn Germans think of it all.

Our cars should have the capability of predicting the future, that would make the number in the little screen accurate.
