Toyota is leaving F1!

Toyota is expected to announced on Wednesday afternoon Japan time that it is withdrawing from Formula 1 with immediate effect, following a decision by the company's board of directors on Tuesday in Japan.

I just hope Kobayashi still gets a drive. He deserves it more than Trulli. Glock will definitely have something next season too.

According to Ferrari pull-out by Toyota is not due to economic downturn.

Toyota cited the reason for its abrupt exit from F1 is current severe economic realities. But an item published on Ferrari's official website argued that Toyota and its fellow car makers' decisions had been prompted by a 'war on manufacturers' in F1.
Ferrari's official website reads: "In reality the steady trickle of desertion is more the result of a war against the big car manufacturers by those who managed the sport, than the effects of the economical that affected Formula 1 over the last years".

So they are leaving F1 due to economic conditions, but they are still going to be producing a $400k supercar. Sounds confusing to me.

It's still possible(albeit difficult) to make money on a 400k supercar - just ask Ferrari.

It's definitely impossible to make money in F1 unless your name is Eccelstone.

I would drop Jenson off that list until somebody actually pays him. Raikkonen and Alonso are the two moneymakers.

If you think about it, car manufacturers sponsored racing to promote their engines/cars in the showroom.

Now that Toyoya will be all hybrid within the next decade, it makes sense to pull out of racing.

What will sell cars of the future is no longer speed, but efficiency. This requires a different promotion angle.

Race tracks will be seen as environmental waste lands.

If you think about it, we have been reacing internal combustion engines for over 100 years. Seems quite archaic in this day and age.

That's why all the companies cite economic downturn as the reason for pulling out? Racing goes back to the dawn of time. Competition is what pushes everybody.

And I seriously doubt anybody watches Formula 1 and decides what car to buy from that. I didn't buy my car because of Sauber's win record.
