92/93 3-serires comparison

I've had a 06 325i, and have given a friend the chance to drive it a few times over the years. He really loved the drive, but would prefer not to spend as much for a car. He still wants a BMW though and has been looking for a 92/93 3 series.

This was my first BMW and I really loved how it handled. It gave me a new perspective on driving. I doubt the older car will be as much fun, but are there any alternatives (other than BMW)? The price is around $4000. How significant is the difference? Also, how reliable are these older models?

an e30 is always fun. 1990/1991. be prepared to replace some things.

and older beamer can drive as firm as a new one if you replace all the bushings

I just moved up from a 92 318i and honestly they are both fun cars to own. If buying an 18 year old car, then make sure he pays a little extra and gets one in top shape with as few km's as possible. Mine had 460k and although fun, it was a bit sloppy compared to a newer one based on wear and tear. My neighbor has a 95 with 260k and it runs and drives as tight as a new one based on being the only owner and having regular maintenance done and not driving the crap out of it. They new bmw has more bells and whistles and newer technology but for very little you can own an E36 and change up the wheels and suspension and have a great handling vehicle. My 92 modded handles about the same as my stock 06, but the mods are coming this spring and I cant wait to see the difference. Remember, whatever he buys, he will still own a BMW.

Older cars are usually more fun for me. They feel more like go carts...slow ones.
