Warm up the car without keeping the key inside (Comfort Access)
Winter is here
Do you guys warm up the car without keeping the key inside? Sometimes I start the car and lock the door to warm it up... Is that bad for the car?

Yeah if you keep the engine running without the key in the car, it thinks it's stolen and when you get back in, it will teaser you and call BMW Assist to the scene to arrest you

You shouldn't let your car sit and warm up. Your car needs to heat up evenly, engine, transmission, diff. Sitting inside and driving off is a better idea.

Will it really call bmw assist?? I do this all the time if i'm just running in to get something, as I have a really safe neighborhood etc., but i'm not a subscriber so that could explain why I don't ever get calls or anything.

Drive the car for awhile, not accelerating over 3k RPM. That's the best way to warm up a car. Leaving it sit won't fully circulate the oil.

I always turn the car on let it run for about 4-5 mins with out the key in it lol. Then just hop in and go, I have never been a fan of the start up and go process. Although I've own some older cars which need to be warmed up and this habit has stuck with me on all my cars.

I won't hurt it to run it at idle while cold, I would not do it everyday because they are not designed for that condition and oil and the lubrication systems are not optimal while very cold and at idle so for that reason I would not do it every day.

I put a block heater on mine to keep the oil a little bit warm throughout the day. It seems to work okay. When its really cold out (-20 or worse) I will sometimes start it up and let it idle without the key.
At such cold temperatures stress on the engine is unavoidable, and I suspect idling versus driving off is a secondary concern. |

Or get a 335d....
One of the things I LOVE about the 335d is that because the engine makes so little heat (being a diesel) they had to install an electric heater-assist to warm the air coming out of the vents. It's lukewarm (not hot, but WELL above outside temperature) almost instantly coming out of the vents. Add to that the seat heater, and the steering wheel heater, and you're warm!
