Would you switch to a used M5 for around $10K
I may be able to get into a used M5 ( 2 yrs older than my 335xi but less mileage - looks like new ) for around $10K + my 335xi as a trade-in. Would you do it? My main reason for wanting out of the 335xi is the HPFP. If it weren't for that I'd keep my car until it died from old age.
My only concern witht he M5 is New England weather (snow). The M5 will definitely not be able to go out on certain days. Cheers |

you'll get 50-60% less fuel economy.

First year E60 M5, not sure I'd do it. What tranny is in the car? Keep in mind that while your E90 HPFP may be a pain in the butt, that S85 engine is far from trouble free. And in M car fashion many replacement parts are jacked up in price.
Plus you're giving up a warranty on your 3 for likely no warranty on the M5. Gulp! I bet you'll trade one set of issues for another. Pick your poison. Also, check insurance rates before you jump into the M5. |

Nope, I hate used cars. Buying a used car assumes that the previous owner took care of it the same way you would have. CPO or not, it's not worth it to me..

I kind of agree with MassBimmer. Driving around daily you can tell easily 99.9% of people do not take care of their cars like you would. Although, that would be very tempting.. mmm M.

Maintenance on the M5 is no picnic. I would never keep such a car as a daily driver.

If I had the money, I'd buy an E39 M5 and use it as a second car. If you shop carefully, you can find one that was cared for by a fellow enthusiast for ~ $20K.

As a BMW employee you probably did mostly warranty work and that's completely different.

Dude, I think your 10 word posts are doing more harm promoting your site than good. Seriously think about it. If you don't have anything substantial to say don't.

My thoughts exactly. Especially knowing what people do to their cars (not letting them warm up, not changing oil frequently enough, not performing proper break ins) and what people do when they realize they're no longer keeping the car (I had a buddy who bought a used 325i and its power steering pump broke on the way out of the lot. When the technicians checked it out, they said the break was caused by somebody holding the wheel in full lock for an extended period of time. Turns out the previous owner had decided to have some fun before returning the car, doing donuts in a parking lot and subsequently damaging the power steering unit).

To MassBimmer and maswastage, your hate towards used cars is costing you a very large amount of money just so you know. After owning a few you can actually get pretty good at picking out the good stuff and with that skill in place you can save substantial amount of money.
I am not judging, I am just saying there is a cost attached to owning new cars all the time. My daily driver so far has always been new, but that trend might change for me.

I say go for it. I have a buddy who had an M3. He put snow tires for the winter and it handled great in the snow! Tires make a huge difference!

I don't have any problems with getting a used car per se. I've owned preowned and new BMWs in the past, and have not noticed any more problems with the preowned ones. Sure, cosmetically, there are differences between new and preowned. I never kept them longer than 2-3 years though, so I was never really overly concerned about getting a preowned bmw.
But having said that, the preowned ones that I've had were all CPO and still under warranty when I had them. IF the M5 was CPO'd and still under warranty, then I would definitely consider it AFTER doing a very thorough history/inspection on it. But as others have stated, IF it is out of warranty, just be prepared to pay for expensive maintenance work should a problem(s) arise. If you are prepared to tackle the expenses of owning an M5, then by all means, go for it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used M5 if I knew the history. The E60 M5 is a damn beast and I'd love to drive one daily. The cost of gas and maintenance is obviously more, but that goes with the territory. If the difference in the two cars is worth $10K to you, go ahead and switch. As you know, the 5er has been revised, so the old style will look a bit dated in a few years. The E60 M5 will always be a classic, though, so I wouldn't worry about that too much.
In addition to the $10K, figure on a couple thousand a year average in additional maintenance costs plus another few hundred a year more in gas expenses. Since the question is would I switch, I'll answer -- no. I wouldn't. I love the E60 M5, but I wouldn't be interested in trading my car plus $10K for a used one. YMMV.
