Exclamation In search of a stock set of turbos for upgrades /edit/ found!!

Hey guys, Eugene had success finding turbos this way so i thought I'd ask as well. Is anyone selling a stock set of turbos? I plan on getting them upgraded most likely via TurboDynamics

Shoot me a PM if you know of any, thanks!

They are on ebay all the time - they used to go as low as $100 a pair in the fall, lately people have been bidding them up a bit more and $250 seems to be the going rate - just search BMW td03

That same guy sells them constantly on ebay, $255 + shipping is his normal buy it now with a 99 starting point.

@JPSimon... $280 is a good deal but how much is shipping and rebuilding cost? Plus, install unless your DIY? Also, does this let your run higher boost like 20PSI?

honestly I'm not too worried about total price, some really nice Obama money just came in

- the turbos were $280 shipped to me.

- Shipping to the UK is around ~250

- Waiting to hear back from TD about price, they're still finalizing their stage 2 upgrade so that's TBD.

So far the review from e92fan is very promising. I'm really curious to see how it compares to the stock turbos. It seems like the right time to do this since it will require very limited (if any) additional tuning with v4. I'll of course be doing before/after dynos/datalogs etc.

Here is a little more info.. I was actually thinking about getting Blouch to do the work since they are relatively local, but I found a thread on here where someone had asked them and gave them a few reasons why they didn't think it was worth it. I passed that on to TurboDynamics and here was their response (TD response in bold):

Quote:
1. You cannot port the inlet because the charge pipe ID is matched and porting will result in turbulent airflow due to the rapid diameter change.
Yes that is correct, any porting of the compressor cover outlet will result in turbulent air exiting the compressor cover as it encounters the smaller bore intake pipe, it has to be pointed out though that having the ID of the compressor cover larger than the remaining intake pipe work is unlikely to yield any power gains anyway so the porting is not really required.

2. Clipping a turbine wheel can result in high end gains but come at a cost of overall turbo efficiency, the td03 wheel is so small that clipping actually results in a loss of power.
Clipping a turbine wheel does remove some material from the blades which has the benefit of relieving back pressure created by the increased flow. The drawback to this is reduced blade surface area which will induce slightly more lag - the turbine wheels we "clipped" for Tony produced no extra lag and allowed him to turn the boost down and still make the same power...

3. The stock headers and turbine housings are are impossible to port. Yes hence why we didn't.

4. Unless you produce a custom piece, there are no options out there for upgraded compressor wheels. Furthermore they said any gains by an upgraded wheel would be marginal at best and definitely not worth the investment.
Again I think our work on Tony's turbo contradicts this, the compressor wheels we used were of a bespoke Turbo Dynamics design. The term marginal is open to interpretation but we would consider being able to turn the boost down and still making the same power to be well worth the investment. It will be interesting to see what happens when the boost is upped again. Potentially there will be a point in the future where power gains will stop more than likely due to a restriction being present somewhere else i.e. manifolds / headers not flowing enough to produce anymore power but I don't think we're at that level yet...

My honest opinion is it is all salesperson talk, we are not looking to get involved in any sort of discussion about what will or will not work. We'd rather let our turbo's do the talking...with the help of a couple of BMW enthusiasts we are looking to develop a stage 2 upgrade using larger turbine wheels as well but the key point is these will still be water cooled which we feel is a necessity due to the evidence of high heatsoak we've noted on all units we've seen to date.

Good stuff JP.........this seems like a great option for upgrading our turbos. Not only by reinforcing them, but by gaining some definate power. Ill be awaiting there news on the stg.2 upgrade,as im seriously considering 2 do this in the future, just wondering what are the exact benefits ( durability and HP GAIN) and price point ofcourse.
