New M3 with inline 6 and TS turbos

Was reading Road and Track page 20 I think, and it stated that the new M3 would be a inline 6 with twin scroll turbos, but no data on Hp/Trq etc...

Things could get real interesting...

Anybody else heard this.

I've heard about this as well from one of my buddy's who works at BMW.

I think one of the reason being is because Audi is changing their S4 4.2L V8 setup to go 6 cylinder twin turbo. I actually read that off of one of the magazines I subscribed to.

Audi just changed the S4 to a 3.0 V6 Supercharged engine.....are they going to be changing again?

As we have seen, the N54 with properly sized turbos and supporting mods is good for 500+ WHP.

With stronger internals and (hopefully) shorter stroke, displacement goes up as does redline rpms.

...just think 500 HP N54++ with a redline of 8k.

I'm sure BMW has the S54 castings laying around... somewhere. S54 block, N54 head, properly sized tubo/turbos, game over.

IMO, if BMW decides to go with a 6 it will be a straight six. They'd get blasted for going V6. Too far from their heritage. If they go straight six, they'll go twin turbo as the headers for a single turbo setup would be on the long side which would reduce responsiveness, a serious no no on an M car. So, I'm thinking twin VGT turbos ala Porsche 911 Turbo and an air to water intercooler to reduce the charge piping to further aid in responsiveness.

Probably wrong forum btw...

It can't have twin-scroll turbos because it is not mechanically possible. It can either have one big twin-scroll (less likely) or two single-scrolls. My guess is 3.4-3.6l twin-turbo inline-6 with 440-450hp.

My guess is a 3.3 biturbo. Same engine as the newest X M6/M5 minus 2 cylinders .

yes porsche is definetely boxer engine. Otherwise you could use the back seat space to fit an inline 6 haha

4.4-liter, 32-valve M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine with High Precision Direct Injection, cylinder-bank comprehensive manifold (CCM), and 4 overhead camshafts

I thought the new M3 would have this engine, which is currently in the X5M and X6M..currently rated at 555hp..would be nice. I was going to trade up to the M3 when it came out, but now not so sure if it will be a inline six

They could shoe-horn in the V8, leaving them with only one M engine (cheap from their standpoint) but you have to think that ///M wants to start paring weight from the car hence the move back to a six cylinder engine.

For the record, isnt the 911 (99X cars) a flat six?

I don't get how much closer Audi can put the RS5 to the the R8 V10 (518 bhp/391 lb/ft tq) and still keep it competitive with the M3 pricing. Why would Audi sell an RS5 with near or at 500 hp for $80,000 and then the R8 with the aforementioned stats for $146,000. Granted, the R8 looks badass but the numbers just don't add up for a cheap RS5.
