Vented racehoods w/ open air intakes

Just a thought, would vented hoods for the e90/e92 provide nominal (if any) gains for the performance of an open air intake (or potentially lowering the intake temperature)? In the purpose of this thread, it seems that the placement of the injen dci would be perfect for the vorsteiner vented racehood as it is located right under the vents.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

Here are pictures for reference, notice the placement of the vents vs. the dci.

I believe it would.. Would definitely be a little bit cooler. Might have some dirty filters though.

It would be sick if you got a carbon M3 hood and put custom vents on the side where only the intakes are. That would look PHAT!

I think it would help reduce the heat under the hood but only bad thing is, if it rains, then you better hope your intakes don't suck in water. I was thinking about getting the hood too because of my injen intake sits right under the vent.

when it rains your screwed. I have a vented hood and I swap out my open intakes for a closed box intake plus they get dirty fast

another thing the vents aren't setup to have air channeled in, but to let the hot air leave. the oil gauge does tell me that the car runs 10-15 degrees cooler

These vents provide the cool air coming from the lower grills to be push the hot air out the top.

There would be a benefit of the hood, but I just want to say that I dont think it would be providing a "ram air" effect if thats what you were hoping for.

Again, these hoods are designed to release the hot air.

I wouldnt run this hood on daily driven car personally, due to the amount of debris, rain/snow, etc being able to drop in.

Could it ever really rain enough to cause damage? From what I've heard, an intake would pretty much have to be submerged.

Although this is an E46, it will show you what happens to the hood with rain. Moisture will get in but not enough to soak the filter or cause hydrolock. We run both of our cars here daily with vented hoods and it's never been a problem.

Drop me a PM, I can quote you on the hood.

I wouldn't risk hydrolocking the engine, one big puddle or slash from a passing car and bye bye. Happened to my bro's Maxima, rod flew through the block!

water wouldnt be as much of a problem with afe or bms dci, but since the injen dci is directly under the vent it might be more of a problem because water will go through the vents and fall directly into the intake.

Don't worry about hydro locking, coming from experience in the past with Hondas, the only way to get it is if you run a cold air intake set up with out a valve and that set up has to be way under the fender to make it happen, so we can assume you will be alright with the vented hood unless you thinj that in any way you could be getting galons of water from the vents.

I woudlnt be concerned with hydrolock w that setup. Hell the rain would be like free water injection

I believe the 'hydroshield' mentioned in this vendor thread would address your concerns.

As already said by a few - this hood would not really give u ram air -
but our engine bays are hot and some of that air would be pushed out / escape.

2 things though:
I believe that hood is only avail for e90
someone posted that in miami his oil temps dropped 15 degrees - that is great but hard to believe.

Hydrolock is not an issue that requires submerging of and/or forced water into the intake and then into the engine. Not going to happen from rain drops.
