Need some help... Temporary white smoke.
Hi guys, I always try to learn as much as I can on here without reposting anything and the search button is usually always my friend but I've tried searching a bunch of different ways on here for this topic and have not found anyone with the same exact problem.
Here's my car set-up. I have an E92 335 with the following engine mods: Active Autowerks Processor AA intercooler AA Exhaust AA SSK AFE Duel cone intake HKS BOV and RR catless downpipes The issue I am having is that my car blows out white smoke very inconsistently. Most of the time (7 out of 10 times) it does not smoke at all (When its cold, after its warmed up, at WOT, etc etc.). Sometimes however it will smoke. Its always at the same time as well. Never immediately when I start the car but after about 3-4 minutes while the car is still warming up and I have started on down the road. It will blow white smoke for maybe a minute or two and than go away. I notice it does not start as soon as I drive out of my garage... it always takes a few minutes. I searched and was fearing that it might be burning up the turbos? But if that were true wouldnt it be consistent? Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jian |

Is this like a smokescreen? Is it real thick, or is it just something that goes away when the car warms up? If it goes away once things warm up I wouldn't worry.

Not to sound like a dick but you sure its not the outside temperature dropping. Also does it smell sweat if this is the case you have a blown head gasket and you should check your coolant. Could also be the turbos burning oil.

The smoke isnt really really thick but at the same time it is not just warm exhaust gas looking like white smoke because of a cold climate. I live in Southern California in the morning when I leave for work its already usually about 55-60 coldest. This also will happen on the weekends when I take out the car in the afternoon when the temp is closer to 75-80 degrees F. I have not smelled the smoke as it nevers happens at idle when I could walk outside of the car its always when the gas pedal is pressed. Again it will completely go away if I floor it (WOT). Weird I know. I will try to smell the smoke and good tip in general to know thank you. I will check my coolant level tonight. Also I forgot to mention that I have a daily driver for work so my car is usually strickly used on the weekends or maybe tops one day a week to go to work. Dont know if that matters.
Thanks again |

YES the infrequent use does make a difference. I detailed a 997 turbo for a guy a few months ago, and when he hadn't driven it for a week or so white smoke came out the tailpipes. I say if you don't want to see it, drive the thing more!! It's good for it!

cool I feel better now. Thanks guys! I love driving the beast but I am SUPER scared of taking the mileage past warranty lol. Although I guess if something does happen it would take weeks just to take off all my warranty voiding parts and to clear all codes lol.

Its also the water that condensed in the exhaust system burning off...If you start the car and let it idle for a while and then turn it off just to start it, water will build up in the exhaust...

The guys are right, if you can't smell anything it shouldn't be anything serious. If you see this at WOT I would recommend to check gaskets.
Keep an eye on it, does the car drive any differently? |

The catalytic converters will condensate some water while the car has not been driven for a while. When you start it, it will evaporate into steam. That could be it but you can never be sure.

The main thing is that when the car is at operating temp nothing comes out of the pipe except exhaust. White smoke would indicate water either from condensation in the pipes because its cold or a head gasket if its warmed up. Black smoke you are running rich and blue smoke means you are burning oil.
