I live in California. I don't think there is ever a good time for me to buy anything in Florida

Are you thinking vacation home or primary residence. West coast vacation home I would go Boca Grande. Primary residence Clearwater/St. Pete.

tip to OP...buy a condo on the beach or you'll never sell it. beachfront condos are definitely more sought after than in town. i would recommend my area, but there are lots of old people and the party season is very seasonal (summer). siesta key beach, where i live, has one of the best beaches anywhere in the world IMO. the finest white sand in the states. it's worth a look, but there are better areas for party scene. |

don't know about Siesta, but the one thing I didn't like from Clearwater was that 4-5 months of the year the gulf is 80-90 degrees. Just wasn't refreshing at all for me. And the sand was too fine. Give me big grained pulverized coral any day haha.

I can't wait to move to FL. I've pretty much made up my (young, dumb) mind that it's the place for me. Old people, hurricanes, flooding, bugs, whatever, I just really like it there.

Our vacation home is in St. Pete - PM me if you have any questions. It's gotten a little sketchy lately, well - always has been, but more so since the economy tanked.
But is close to Clearwater (I hate it), Ft. Desoto, Anna Maria (best kept secret) and Sarasota. And of course, the shopping just north in Tampa. P.S. - my wife and I really don't like kids, and would MUCH rather live next to old people. EDIT: Yes, TONS of house for sale on the blocks around us in Old NE.

Montego, one weekend take the wifey down to the Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande. Beautiful quiet town. Ride a bike anywhere you need to go, no big grocery store just the local market. Really romantic in a lost in time sort of way. Real estate there is expensive as hell but everything else including the inn is very reasonable. Avoid mid may-mid july as it is peak tarpon season and is the only time the town gets a little wonky. Other than that it is an amazing place about an hour or so from you.

Thanks! I'm not looking to move for at least 3-4 years...I'm looking to live in a suburban or semi-rural area near the southern tip of FL. Now that I'm researching it, Coral Gables looks like it might not have what I need. Are there any quiet areas nearby? I don't want to live in an apartment, but I also don't want to live in the Everglades

Such a vague question. I am a realtor in MD, but I know some Florida. I would actually declare the gables fairly quiet. You're not into condo/apt so that negates Key Biscayne. PM me if you want to discuss further.

Sorry for the vagueness, I need to take a few more trips as I get closer to being ready to move. But just by looking at Google maps, Homestead looks more like my thing. I'm not too picky about being near the beach, I'd rather live closer to the agriculture than the downtown areas.
