Me (Not) Naked
Not really, but anyway.
So, I've never totaled a car - knock on wood. But I know a lot of people around here have. Whenever people make posts, everyone (after saying glad you're OK, etc.) says something like: Time to upgrade Looks like a brand new coupe for you time to switch to a 335 (from 328) So, does that mean you get more than what your car is worth? How does it work? Do they give you the current blue book value of the car? Or give you what you paid for it? Or give you what you paid for it and then some? Or do they give you the current value of the same car new? Someone edu-ma-cate me, please! Thanks |

Ok, so I opened this thread expecting some hot pics, but now that I'm totally disappointed:
When my daughter totalled our Lexus, the insurance company gave us a replacement cost. I can't remember what company they used, but it involved using KBB and Edmonds and looking through the local papers for an idea of what a replacement would cost. |

Depends on the car and insurance. Wrecking older shittier cars is probably better.
My friends sister wrapped a piece of shit jeep around a tree. The car was probably worth around $1500. $2K max And the insurance paid out like $8000. No idea how but it was a good trade up

two words: gap insurance.
pretty good thing to have, especially if your car belongs to someone with a word "Financial" in the name

I work for an insurance company - a large and reputable one. Our obligation is to get you back to where you were before the wreck. Generally we will work along with you to determine the worth of your vehicle prior. They will essentially try to cut you a check for whatever it would cost to purchase a similar vehicle with similar miles, etc in your area. Opinions may differ between what you can replace it for, which is why having a quality company is important. A crappy company will lowball you, where a quality one will give you fair value.
Some companies, like Progressive, limit the amount of aftermarket parts they will repay you for ($1,000 in this instance). You can sometimes purchase additional coverage. Some companies, like State Farm, will pay for ALL of your aftermarket parts regardless of cost as long as you can prove you had them. If you have Gap coverage on your loan, your vehicle will be paid back in a similar manner, but the insurance will cut an additional check for the remainder of the loan to your lien. What else would you like to know? Edit: I also feel betrayed by this thread title.
