wastegate rattle?
hi guys, when i'm driving my car next to a wall, say accelerating from 2500-3000rpm gradually, i can hear some rattles. also if i'm downshifting and it rattles between 3000rpm-2700rpm. the rattling is not too loud, i can only hear it when my window is down.
here is a short clip of idle a a few rev. note: between 0:20-0:24, i was moving from P -> D -> N, notice the metal clicking noise changes. is that metal clicking noise normal or do the wastegates rattling? thank you so much for the help!

yes, it sounds like the wastegates rattling. I had my actuators replaced at 11k, but i still have some rattle at times, just not as bad. It's a bitch, I did not like the rattle in my car, sounds cheap.

I have this too, hear it at cold starts and under slight acceleration between 2-3K rpm and yes it is annoying. I think the cold start rattling (lasts 30-60secs) and the slight rattle during acceleration are related. The question is..... Is this the beginning of the dreaded rattle during deceleration?? and will the dealer do anything hardware wise if it is? I don't think so according to this latest post:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...99&postcount=5 More of the same issues from other members: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=rattle+ista http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...e+acceleration I’ve heard the V4 actually fixes the problem altogether even after people have gotten new turbos which didn't fix it (rattles/flutters even worse w/dps installed). Supposedly Shiv came up with a fix, I guess you have to mess with the wastegate duty cycle adjustment? Wonder if JB3 can do the same thing or is doing it now? FYI...I am in no way affliated with either tuner. Just trying to help the community out. This is what I've summarized so far from a lot of searching and reading. |

topless ///m, thanks for the info! yes i've read the posts from the links and also notice their new procedures. so i was thinking if mine is not too loud or too terrible, i guess i'll live with it for awhile, as long as it is not a ASAP fix.
but yea, i keep listening to Mr.5's wastegate rattle on youtube, mine doesn't get the flutter sound as loud as Mr. 5, or i could barely hear any if i rev it at idle. so can you confirm if my wastegates start rattling?

They will probably update your software first to see if it fixes the problem. I couldn't really tell from the video. I've seen some videos where the rattle was really obvious.

I believe what you and I are noticing as well as others is the start of the wastegate deceleration rattle found here:
As of now, I only get cold start rattles that last 30-60secs in the morning and a rattle under slight acceleration as you and others have heard (aftermarket dps make it even worse). I believe over time what we're hearing will get progressively worse becoming what is posted above (the infamous wastegate rattle). Others have had software updates, actuators replaced, thicker 8mm actuator rods installed, only to have the rattle come back. Most end up getting new turbos to fix the problem, for how long?? no one knows yet if it's a permanent fix. The new turbos supposedly have a heavier duty bushing in the turbo housing that the wastegate flapper rotates in so there is no play therefore the wastegate flapper cannot rattle against the turbo housing. Still some have gone as far as getting new turbos but can still hear what you and I as well as others are hearing now which is that flutter/rattle under slight acceleration (louder with dps installed), but not when revving at idle. |

^ on that video, its really obvious, the ticking goes in and out. On the OPs video, I hear some ticking but it doesn't go in and out. It sounds like the same ticking sound when idle.

that's interesting.... i dont hear much rattles at cold start, but if i'm at a drive-thru or next to a wall, whenver i shift from D to N, i can hear the metal clicking noise changes. sometimes when the car is warm up or after driven and oil temp reach normal, once i pull into my garage, i can hear the metal clicking again. the noise is not really loud but definitely there.

OP: this is definitely not the sound of your wastegates rattling. dont worry, what you're hearing is just normal with the 335

OMG, I had the rattle ever since I got the car, first I though something is loose, but after spending 2 hours inspecting the exhaust system I found it's the rear WasteGate that's making all that noise.
After reading some posts BMW says it's NORMAL!?!? I can't believe it lawl. Easier to say it's Normal than replace pair of $3000 turbos I guess. I had many turbo cars and none had this design flaw. Anyways, I am gonna attempt fixing this myself tonight, see what comes out. Art |
