Help:Front PDC Sensors Clearance Issue, LCI M-tech bumper

(not quite sure where this really belongs, so mods if u deem this topic isn't broad enough for the general forum pls feel free to move it)

I am hoping any member with access to ETK (if that's still what it's called), especially the European members, can lend a hand and help look up some info/part # for me: the front PDC sensors and bumper carrier bar on Euro-spec M-tech LCI sedans.

I've recently retrofited my regular sports package LCI sedan that has F/R PDC sensors with the M-tech front bumper. As the thread title states, my problem is that there isnt enough clearance behind the bumper to fit the two middle PDC sensors.

Unlike the regular LCI front bumper, where the entire bumper surface from left to right is a smooth curve, the M-tech front bumper's middle portion is recessed. During the installation we found out this design took up enough space that my original middle PDC sensors would no longer fit; they are bumping up against the bumper carrier bar even without the wires plugged in. I had to completely leave out the middle 2 sensors to hook up the M-tech bumper; as a result the PDC function is disabled for now.

I looked up BMW USA and just found that apparently regular US-spec LCI sedans get front and rear PDC sensors, but M-tech bumper equipped cars only receive rear PDC sensors, likely for the same clearance reason I ran into. However I did manage to find several pics posted in various threads on this forum showing some European M-tech LCIs do come with front PDC sensors

Something is different on the European-spec cars that allow front PDC sensors to fit on M-tech bumper, either different size PDC sensors or different bumper carrier bar. Has anyone in the US done this retrofit? Any European member can share the above part # on your M-tech car? thx

Interested also, wonder if the Bmw performance bumper has the same issue.

Any idea how much the carrier is and/or how to replace? Pic or diagram would help.

just a suggestion (not tested in real life)

may be you can just drill holes in existing carrier in places where sensors are bumping up against the bumper carrier bar, would not cost you anything.

Why does Europe get the better options? I thought the US was the #1 profit market for Munich. LAAAAAAAAAME

US laws differ. In this case the frontal crash protection standards and the airbag module mandate a different design. While they could have also redesigned the bumper itself, I suspect that there is little demand for the front PDC - even though I like it.

exactly. If it was designed for the us market first, we would have it.

Since it hasn't, BMW hasn't redesigned the bumper(s).

Maybe the 2011 E90s will have this as the 2011 E92s have the Mtech front/front PDC combo.

I am doing the rear and front PDC install on my 2009 335i xDrive Coupe. I am running into clearance issue for the front PDC. I have been drilling through the front bumper carrier but its steel and tough to cut into it to have a 2 big enough holes to fit the 2 middle sensors.

Does anyone know if I can buy a front bumper support that will fit into my car (2009 335i xdrive coupe) and be able to fit the 2 middle sensors. Does anyone have the part number for such a front bumper support.

Thanks in advance

RB

Bit of a thread dig but did anyone here sort this? I presume the official retrofit document that says "M sport" is not compatible is US oriented?

From what I can tell:

The "Euro" bumper support is 51117146645 e.g.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...12&hg=51&fg=15

The US bumper support is 51117146646 e.g.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...12&hg=51&fg=15

Also refer to this part at ECS tuning
http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Site...46645/ES74663/

I am looking to retro fit front PDC to my Australian 323i E91 (which will be Euro spec). I'm trying to find some real photos of each bumper support but it's pretty unclear in the ones I've found. I can't see any specific cutouts there.

I don't really want to pull the front bumper off just to check, put it all back before I order the parts and then have to pull it all off again....

quite an old thread but wanted to confirm that the euro P/N:51117146645 can be used to replace the US bumper support and allow proper clearance for the two inner parking sensors on an M-sport bumper. Hopefully this helps a random internet stranger.
