Thumbs up shiv's first customer for Xede +exhaust

Do to popular demand I guess I must write a review.

With 2-hours of sleep I left from LA to Bay Area around 2 am Friday. Stocked up with starbucks double shots and headed on over. Though I was already excited I didn't want to fall asleep while driving. Absolutely no traffic so I arrived around 7:20 at modacar tuning. Average speed was 80mph. would've been faster if there was no fog.

At around 9am met up with shiv and started baseline dynoing. Slightly dissapointed with lower stock #'s compared with the non-updated software. I looked at the new dealer updates air/fuel and looks like they were running a little richer at lower RPMs. Shiv said it wouldn't matter because the xede would fix all that. Another thing I noticed was that it took a little longer(1-2 seconds) to startup after the dealer updates. Also It was foggy so maybe humidity could have affected that morning. I believe it was 58% humidity. It was 44% for the final tunning the next day.

Then we took both our cars to the Exhaust place to drop it off for the day. I had a hard time following him because his damn cornoring skills were off the hook. And of course he was driving a modified Porche 911. At the exhaust place I talked to the exhaust expert and got an 2.5 ince X-pipe because I thought it would be quieter.

We then took his car and drove to the shopping mall. Thanks to shiv's driving for waking me up again. I then spent all afternoon and evening with my family. I haven't been this tired since graduate college. Still feels like a blur of a day. I then got to sleep at 2am due to my cousin wanting to watch DVD's all night. Woke up 7am and then went to church - Sprint - Barnes Nobles - movie theatre (saw james bond)- barnes nobles again - then back to see Shiv at about 5pm. Shiv was trying new things to the car so he needed more time. Of course Shiv was working on cars till midnight the night before. This guy is sooo busy, I don't know when he has time to do anything else. Shiv's first dyno with the standard Xede configs yeilded a slightly lower HP and Tq result. Then after a few more runs He got about 8 more from costume tuning. I guess all cars are a little different. During the time Shiv was making jokes (quiet the comedian). Afterwards Shiv test drove the car with me in the passenger seat. You guys should have seen it. Shiv had a turbo boost gauge in his left hand a laptop on his right(my lap) and pushing the car while driving. Anyways I was too busy getting scared out of my pants. It wasn't the same car anymore. I then took my cousin for a test drive and we were both speechless during the drive.

Here's how it now drives:
The sound is not loud at all. Normal people that doesn't own a a 335 wouldn't know if it was modded.
Personally Cannot compare with Shiv's car because I never saw it. Shiv said his car was not all together.
Shiv said the x-pipe was slightly quieter. The people at Modacar said it was barely noticeable. I like the deaper sound of it. Also it doesn't set off alarms which was a big concern.
This thing is now faster than my previous E39 M5.
I wouldn't be suprised if the 0-60 is in the low 4 sec. If I had to guess with factory stock tires 4.4 sec 0-60 mph. Without Runflats Or my heavy 19in wheels could be even better.
On the freeway, I don't down shift to pass cars anymore. 6th gear now pulls like 4th gear on the freeway. Crazy huh?
The back tires easily spins in 1st and 2nd without clutch. We are not talking about chirping either.
I don't know how long these tires can last.
At around 3K RPM you can't floor it without loosing traction. Need to relearn self control.
It needs wider tires now, Can't figure out full potential if your all over the place.

I was thinking about the new M3 before, but now it doesn't cross my mind. I'm keeping this baby for a long while.

Anyways dove back that night and got home around 1am. Showered, ate then slept. With 7hrs total sleep all weekend I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow. Woke up around 5pm, talked to Shiv and now I am writing this review.
The Xede seems relatively simple enough to uninstall. There is two empty slots next to ECU to tuck in. There is alot of wires back there and can get confusing for a non-mechanical guy like myself. I think I will tag the 3 wires with different colored electrical tape so not to get confused. The solenoid bypass is even simpler. I think I would take me around 15min to uninstall. Takes some time because BMW put covers for their covers. There is 3 covers you have to remove to get to it. As long is the dealer is not working on the softwere ECU, just opening the hood you can't tell anything has been done. What I am saying is that you don't have to uninstall xede all the time when you go to the dealership. Have Shiv tell you his BMW cover jokes when you see him, pretty funny. Also Shiv is going to have a super detailed instructions with pictures for all of us on the internet, so not to worry.

The only concerns I have is that if something goes wrong, shiv will be too far to help.
Had a great experience with Shiv. He took the time to answer all my questions and he would call to see How everything is going. Actually He was the one who woke me up today at 5pm.
I would definitely do this again, with more sleep of course.
Sorry this post is so long but I want to make sure all non-technical points were answered. I'll try to answer everyones questions. This week might be a lttle busy time for me and then there is Thanksgiving coming ups.

From One extremely happy BMW enthusiest

Edit: here is the technical writeup and dyno graph -- http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36987

Heh, Heh.

Exxagerating? Well I have nothing to gain.
Well I don't mind sharing the smiles this car has given me?
I already have 4 friends with 335i they are now knocking down my door ready to test drive it {now that was exaggerating, my door is okay}. They also read this forum. I don't want to be known as an "exaggerator".

if you think about it 330whp + 357tq. In real world terms 413 hp and 446 tq (using 25% ). Don't you think these # will do some damage? This car stock was already fast. Remember the e46 M3 comparison?

You will know soon enough.
Good luck on your car with the mods.

Sam

Great review, and congrats!

When you said you need wider tires... can you elaborate on that? I assume you got ZSP so are you sticking with the same 18" size, but a wider base? Will that require spacers? I'm somewhat clueless about this stuff!

Thanks, for the review.... Have you noticed any increase in oil temp? The tires you are using are the stock runflats right? I will have 19x 10 rears with 265 tires do you think that will be fine? Im also kinda new to this technical stuff.

I do not have sport package. I do have 19inch wheels. They are running the Runflats same as stock. Bridgestone potenza

For BenMw - well the oil temp during hours of dynoing did go up. Understandable since its not moving. But never did it get near the 300 degree shut-off point. Also remember turbo normally a little hotter anyways. This engine is built for these temps or so the dealership says.
Oh and Ben make sure your wheels don't go heavier than the stock, you will gain unsprung weight.
I have 255 wide on the rears right now. I think 275 will be better and 19 x10 will definetly fit with offsets.

Remember the car is a factory tuned twin turbo engine. Its not really surprising that with a few mods such as chip and exhaust that its making 60-70 hp and even more amount of torque. I had an 01 s4 biturbo and with chip alone i got up to 50 hp gains and close to 70 foot lb's of torque.

Ummm ... did you even bother to take a look at the link with the dynos? If not ill repost it again. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36987

sam was making any where from 264-270hp and 283-285lbft. With the upgrades he was making 329 hp and 357 torque. Ok... lets do math here now, 270 - 329 =
59 hp gain.

Very nice sam! This write up is really making me wanting to drive up there and get it installed. Did break in your car before you had it put in? And also if your car auto or manual?

I started my journey with 1300 miles. I have 2200 miles now.
Well during my break in (before 1200 miles) I accidently went over 5000 rpm around 5 times. I floored it about 3 times (at about 1000 miles). It was so hard to control myself. Forgive me for I have cheated.
Manual all the way. More fun with a stick. (not to sound gay)

In LA there is not much room for me to accelarate now. Looks like I'll be heading to the mountains next weekend. Angels crest or Big Bear.

Nice i hope to see your car around if we do a get together in so cal area. Ya I was going to do the break in just too 1000 miles. Keep us posted and let us know if theres anything wrong. I really wanna know if that temp spikes alot. Thats whats making me a bit wary from getting excede before a cooling system, or lsd.

I'll let you know more of the oil temps. So far It hasn't gone above 275 yet. I really wouldn't worry about the temp. Me and Shiv were really pushing it during the test runs and no problems.
I too was thinking about the LSD but decided not to do it. As long as you don't peel out your back tires during accelaration on a turn, then you should be fine. With some practice driving I believe you can be just as fast.
This is my 3rd Bimmer all modified, so in my experience get LSD if you absolutely have to have it for a peace of mind. I think we should ask Shiv since he drives different costumer cars everyday and owns a handful of modded cars.
Hey Shiv can you give your opinions? You drive and corner like a mad man so what are your thoughts?
