Engine light & smell of gas

Yesterday I got an engine light come on while driving. I pulled over to see what was wrong but didn't have a computer to see if it threw any codes. First thing I notice was a smell of fuel around me. I have a little over 26k miles on the car right now. I'm going to be changing the plugs soon, but what could contribute to the smell of gas?

Anyone willing to lend me the wrench for the plugs!

I tried not clearing the code but every time I would start the car it would shake. I was on side of an exit so I just said the hell with it and cleared it, waited a few minutes and car started fine.

That is pretty convenient to be able to just clear codes on the side of the road and be able to get on your way when you have no laptop/BT with you.

Sorry I can't help with your particular issue, but it just seems like a perfect illustration of why having a tune with code clearing capability builtin and available at all times is a good thing. If you rely on your BT you need to have a laptop in the car all the time to be able to have the same convenience.

The Procede actually would have kept the codes in its memory until you turned the engine off or did another reset. So in this case you could have plugged the laptop in when you got home (without doing another code read/reset), and the codes would have been in the DME codes datalogging parameter.

Of course it would be great if we could display codes, but there is no real output we have to display them other than the laptop connection at the current time.

So after I did a gas pedal reset to clear code, I could of read the code when I got home?

Yes... The Procede reads the codes on the first press of the pedal, and clears them on the second. It does not then reread them until you do it again. Therefore unless you did it twice, the data from the first read of the codes will stay there until you either read again, or turn off the procede and therefore reset the memory.

Wow, nice feature. Didn't know it was configured like that. I guess I still wouldn't of got the code because I was on my way to a game so I shut down the car again before I got home. I will definite have this in mind next time something like this happens. Very nice thinking. Now you guys have to store them in memory just in case of what happen in my scenario.

The smell of fuel could be a good indication you were having misfires. I had the same problem as you, and took my car to the dealer - they told me there was a bulletin out for this problem, and the fix is a "shotgun" replacement of coils, plugs, and injectors. NOT FUEL PUMP (to my disappointment). good luck!

Thanks. I figure it was that. Is on my to do list. The plugs that is. Hopefully not the rest.

It would be great to store them in memory catalogued by time/date, but that would take a fair bit of work to both firmware and software to retrieve them, and there are higher priorities at the current time. So just realise that you can clear codes and check the codes later as long as you do not reset them. May come in handy some time.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I feel more comfortable now I know it's configured this way. Once ya are free to explore the memory issue, that would be a welcome + to this feature.
