Sailboats
Looking to get a sailboat. Who are some of the top manufacturers of sailboats? Looking for one 30-35 feet and reasonably priced, not custom ones going for $250k.

What kind of a sailboat are you looking for? Used? New? Cruiser? Racer?
If you want a cruiser and willing to go used, Island Packets are one of the best cruisers out there. My parents have a 1989 Island Packet 35 and it is a great boat to sail and very stable due to its full keel. The only bad side to our Island Packet is that it needs 10 knots of wind to get going. Any lower and it is a snail. Fifteen knots of wind is when it hits its stride and really gets going. One of the best aspects of getting an Island Packet is that they hold their value really well. They are like the Honda's of sailboats. I have seen 1989 Island Packet 35's go from $120K to $140K used. They went for $150K brand new back in 1989. He was actually looking at just plain fishing boats for around 25-40k. I'm trying to convince him to get the sailboat

You can get a used J-24 for like $20k. They have the biggest one-design racing following. Check them out! Fast little boats but sparse on accommodations.

Well clearly the OP wants dad to buy the sailboat so the OP can USE it! DUH!!!! Chicks dig sailboats, but smelly fishing boats? Not so much. OP thinks it will be a floating shag-pad...... Boating wisdom: Don't own a boat, have friends who own boats. BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand The two happiest days in a boat owner's life: The day they bought it, and they day they sold it! And finally, the "Rule of 4 F's." If it FLIES, FLOATS, FUCKS of fires FULLAUTO, rent it!

I'm not sure if you know but maintaining a sailboat is a whole new world.
We were looking for a used boat under $75k and as soon as we found about how much money we need just to maintain including parking was just too crazy for us. Maybe parking on water is just too expensive where I live. They asked us $12000 per year...let alone cleaning and other stuff... |

There are so many options in the <$100 price range, you'll be overwhelmed. The best thing to do is to pick up a couple sailing magazines at Barnes & Noble or search through some of the sailing forums and get answers from people that are very familiar with their boats.
On a side note - I assume you/your dad know how to sail? If this is a first time boat, sailing can be quite intense and there can be a learning curve so sometimes it's a good idea to get a smaller starter boat to get the basic sailing fundamentals down. That's why powerboats are pretty fun - put the key in and your off! |

In the summer, it was great.......when we used it. We kept it on the water, so we could literally cast off and be gone in a few minutes. And Seattle has some amazing places to go with a boat.
But, we always felt like we HAD to use it every nice weekend, since it was costing us $500 a month with the payment and the moorage. Then maintenance issues would start cropping up, winterizing, etc., etc. And with a 105 gallon fuel tank, you really started wondering about it when fueling on the water at $3.00/gallon (this was a few years ago, well before the spike in gas prices.) Then we had children, and our particular boat didn't work for us anymore (not enough cabin ******, so we sold it. So yeah, we were pretty happy the day we bought it, and pretty happy the day broker called and said it was sold! We'll get another boat someday. There is just too much cool stuff to visit around here in a boat (San Juan islands, Canada, South Sound, etc.) ETA: Why is the word s-p-a-c-e being replaced with "******"???? Weird.....

we have 3 boats in total. speed boat (a Formula), 35m yacht (ex-soviet hospital ship renovated) and sail boat (East-germany built). We've had them since I was like 3years old. To us they have always been there and never felt like a luxury we need to take advantage of. We never really considered the bills much They are in Cyprus and get used up twice a month by me when I fly there to spend time
