BMW's New HPFP

My car just had its fuel pump replaced and while I was picking up my car I got to chatting with one of the SA's I know pretty well. He stopped the Service manager who helped me lemon my first car due to fuel pump issues and we started chatting and he told me that they just got word of a new pump. I asked him what the difference was between this one and the one that supposedly replaced the 881 pump (4943 pump) and he said this is the one that is supposedly gona be the final fix. He said they found like 6 or 7 internal problems with the HPFP. I asked him if they had a part number and he said they hadn't gotten one yet but that yesterday was when they were supposed to officially start getting them in. I said if I had known that I would have tried to wait for the new one and he said don't worry you'll definitely be back at least one more time for a pump. So be on the look out for this new pump. Lets hope this really is the final fix cause at this point these fuel pump issues are beyond ridiculous.

yep new bosch pump and software upgrade that as soon as you unlock the car starts the main tank fuel pump to put the fueling system in pressure.

In all fairness, I can't believe the idiot engineers in BMW did not think of pre-priming the fuel system on the get go. Every other fuel injected car does that! Its the only way you can get any fuel to go through the damn fuel injectors.

I am seriously beginning to think that BOSCH outsourced the programming of the ECU to India or Pakistan. The vast majority of software programmers/engineers/architects from Asia have absolutely no idea what are they doing...

The HPFP issues have existed with every version of the N54 HPFP produced by Siemens, Bosch and now Continental/Siemens so I highly doubt it is a production issue and more like a design / operational issue. If it was a QC issue on the N54 HPFPs these vendors would be paying the warranty costs and they'd have been out of business years ago.

I had the 943 installed about a month ago, and one difference I noticed was that it (very loudly) comes on when I unlock/open the door. I'm only assuming its the HPFP priming, but with the software update I wasn't sure if it was that or something else.

So after using the Continental as a replacement for only a couple months they're going back to Bosch?

Have there been a bunch of reports of the Cont unit failing too?

as stated before, bmw has always had a 3 sec prime on the systems back to the K/L-jetronic system (early fuel injection systems)

its more noticeable because they extended it and make sure the line pressure is up...

but there is more to the software that just that, there are new test routines in the code, supposedly to help with "future" HDP problems.

wish this was a easy as a "smooth running" test for the M60 engines that died with all the sulfur in the fuel during the mid '90s .. but its not

Probably a design engineering issue on BMW's side, BUT - Siemens / Conty / Bosch are not going out of business even if they had to replace every single HPFP on their own dime.

I've seen some mighty good work product from Asian software developers, mate.

I've also seen total crap from developers right here in the U S of A.

you car does do it, you just cant hear it. when you insert the key into the CAS the fuel pump relay is energized, primary pump runs and then stops, til you hit the start button.

they have inserted code to trigger the relay earlier and a longer time duration to the primary pump. instead of the typical 1-3 seconds runtime before the starter is engaged....
