How long a crank duration should be in order to classify as "long crank" ?

Hi,

For some time, when I start the car mostly in the morning, it takes more to start up than it took when it was new. Maximum 1.5-2 seconds though. Is this classified as "long crank" (aka. predecessor of HPFP failure) ? Before, I couldn't even hear the crank, it started right up.

I had a software update in March but I don't remember if that's when the prolonged start times begun. Could it be that the new software update from BMW introduces this prolonged crank time in order to protect the fuel pump somehow ?

Or could it be the battery ? I have 23k miles and the car is 1.5 years old.

Thanks !

EDIT: I have uploaded a video so you can better hear the cranking sequence.
Sorry for the crappy (Nexus One) quality.

I would qualify a long crank to be anything more than 1.5-2 seconds... I've had as long as 5 second cranks (this was before I had my HPFP & LPFP replaced and software updated) With the update and replaced pumps, it starts right up now, I think the longest I've had was about 1 second, other times it starts as soon as the button is pushed.

I thought that that used to be normal as I don't have a garage but then I got my HPFP replaced and it starts right up even being left outside over night, take it in and see what they say.

if it's over 1 second, it's not normal. Even on cold starts it does not exceed like 4 cranks.

The longest crack I've had was after days in long term park at below zero and that took 3 or 4 seconds. Other than that in all other conditions, it's always push the button, and the engine fires up. I never had a long crank for the HPFP either, it just went into limp on the highway.

well, if you have a BT tool or JB3/Procede, you can monitor fuel pressure, see if your HPFP is working at full duty.

My car is at BMW right now for a possible long crank issue. I have the same problem as you, it only takes maybe 2 sec to fire up, but it used to take 1 sec.

Ill see what they do and post up the results.

yeah for a little over a month now I've been noticing longer cranks also, at one point I felt the whole car shaking when I went to start it up.

I predict that my HPFP is royally fucked.

Hmmm... I recommend you record your crank time every day for the new week, I counted a 2 second delay... But I would have liked to have seen the RPM's and if they revved up to 1.5k or 2k rpms... while you sit and wait for the initial warm up phase, before settling down to 6-700 rpms.

IMO, over three second is long. But under is not a big deal. Plus, without a stop watch, perception of elapsed time can be swayed by emotion.

No way is that a long crank. I have had my starting cycle expire before. 25 secs of cranking and then it just stops. When you are getting 5-7 seconds then you are having a long crank issue
