Seems like the rear one is awful close to the block.

nope, looks about right. even the pictures from BMS seem to show almost the exact same positioning.

I know you want them to stick off the pipe as far as possible... Terry mentioned once if they are too far in there could be some loss in flow.

I put mine in about a 1/2inch or so...

I would lean towards making sure they're seated pretty deep. I have this set up as well, and my rear filter jarred itself loose and fell out completely. I would say, as long as there are no binding points or kinks, stuff em in there. How much performance could you possibly lose if there's a difference of an inch on the depth of your intake filter? If it comes out, now you're not making power. Just speaking from personal experience.
