Drexler LSD installed - first experience

Last weekend I had my Drexler LSD installed.

Why Drexler?
I have a DCT which has a different final drive as the Auto and manual, and it has a welded ring gear. When searching I found 3 products: Quaife, Wavetract and Drexler.
Wavetrac had no solution for the 335 DCT, so Quaife and Drexler remained.

Because DCT is rare there where no exchange pumpkins available, no exchange LSD. Quiafe was because of the welded ring gear quite expensive, in Switzerland even very expensive, so I considered ordering from Birds directly in the UK. The where extremely helpful but in the end this process would be not optimal as the diff had to be build out of the car, sent to birds etc, which would take quite some time and would generate some cost as well. A second problem was finding a good shop which can do the install.
Drexler reduced their prices and was not a lot more expensive taking all cost into account. I could leave the car at the shop in Germany (Raeder Motorsport) which also does my suspension work, they would take care of all the rest.
Regarding quality and functionality, IMO Drexler ist he best product currently on the market. Their engagement and successes in motorsport speak for themselves.
For the 335i Drexler offers 2 standard settings, based on their recommendations I choose for the more aggressive 50/40 setup.

Experience
I tested it on the Ring, and I drove already more then 800 miles on normal road and my experiences are very positive.
In contrarily to what was written be some people here on this forum, there is no sound what so ever. The LSD works completely silently.
Some people say that the Drexler LSD needs maintenance, according Drexler however this is very limited and except when you are racing only, not expected the first 60.000 miles or even not ever.

The LSD really transforms the car. Instead of understeer (because of ESP / DTC correcting the loss of traction) the car now pulls to the inside in the corner when applying throttle in the corner, really great. The car can be steered using the throttle. The traction is unbelievable, not only in corners, also in straightline, the car just rockets forwards (instead of sideways). I rarely see the DSC light blinking.
When the car looses grip in corners, the transition is very smooth and easy to control, a big difference to the standard open diff. The behavior is very predictable, lso with DSC / DTC activated. The electronics function together with the LSD without any issues.

To summarize, I can really recommend the Drexler LSD and also Raeder Motorsport in Germany.

Excellent. I ordered a quaife yesterday for my 6mt. Can't wait to see the benefits you describe.

Check the Drexler website for the current prices of the different models. For the 335i, If you have a welded ringgear you have to count on 3'200 / 3'500 EURO incl. install, especially depending on how much your shop calculates for the hours. Give Raeder Motorsport (Christoph Breuer) a call and ask him for an offer.
For other engine sizes the Prices in general are considerable lower.

Nice review Marcel! Great to see you like it so much. An LSD indeed transforms the car and is MUCH more fun to drive, in particular on the track. Can't wait to meet and see how it goes 'round the 'Ring!

I will indeed put some new lube in every year / 1.5 year, I also do this for engine and brake fluids because it can only be good and not harm. But I also use the Diff in extremer conditions with tracktires.
For a pure daily driver it looks different.

You mention DCT several times in your first post. Do you mean DTC? I don't know if you meant to talk about your transmission is a DCT or you're talking about the ESP DTC. Can you edit your grist post to reflect the changes.

Difficult to believe that the 335i and 335d don't come standard with some form of LSD. And as you discovered, it has many benefits in everyday driving.
They make you pay more for a M car.

I have the welded diff and my car was produced 4/19/2007. I purchased the complete final drive unit so I can just do a swap and no internal work needed. It was $2200 + $800 core and about $100 shipping from Harold at HP Autowerks(I may keep my original as I have kept all stock parts so far). I'm looking to sniz and clem for help with the install, and I would guess 3-4 hours for the first attempt maybe? Ordered the AR Design driveshaft nut tool and also 12 new M10 half shaft bolts (they are flex and need replacement - thanks FBIS) that need a female E10 torx socket. All other tools should just be standard stuff.

I corrected my original post. Indeed, sometimes I meant DTC and not DCT.

thanks for the remark.

Agree, it's not cheap, but riding in an e39 m5 _ ess supercharger and then comparing traction on my run through the same path, there is no comparison. It's a shame they don't factory LSD these cars. I was on the fence due to cost for a long time. I think the traction issues with meth pushed me to buying this. I intend to keep the car for a long time so I figured oh well. The mod bug has got to go away soon!

I completley agree with others that say this is also a safety mod. Once you get over 400whp the one wheel drive becomes a serious problem when that one wheel is slipping so much.

Agreed its an expensive mod for sure....just spent my LSD money on my wife and two boys for a 8 day cruise....Have to keep her happy or else my car and modding addiction will be compromised in the future!!!

I have the LSD now for several months and am enjoying it daily. Grip and predictability is great. Driving it on the Ring is a blast! Winter is coming, am sure I will enjoy it with all the snow here
