How life changes....
On the morning of the election results , very early, the phone rang and we knew what was coming. Sadly Ali's dad suffered a massive coronary in hospital, but at the grand old age of 97! What an age!
The day passed in a strange delerium and I had a very important gig with my new band with loads of people coming over to see us. Immediate inclination was to cancel the gig , but Ali said, quite rightly, that her father would not tolerate that! So we played a blinder and dedicated Living on a Prayer to her, Dennis and the guys in Afghanistan. Anyway, I'm typing really pissed on JD and with music as solace and wishing everyone on here the best...because the coping is hurting and no matter how you prepare for this it hits you very hard. Respect for all

My dad left us a couple of years ago at 96 - you begin to think they'll live forever. A non fatal infection left him in hospital for weeks and then a hospital acquired infection did for him - lots of strife with the crappy hospital he was in - he even had a "silent heart attack" which, I think was hospital speak for "we didn't notice".
I know how you feel and my sympathies are with Ali and you. |

Sadly, I can relate to that only too closely. You have my sympathy.
I have been back in the UK for the last month or so because my Dad was very ill. Helping out directly. He passed away at home last Saturday and the Funeral was on Thursday (election day). He was a member of Turnberry Golf Course for over 50 years. An honorary member. In a very nice gesture Turnberry Golf Course lowered the flags outside the clubhouse and on the first tee to half mast this week. The hearse also turned off the main road and passed the Golf Course one last time on the way to the Funeral. Put a lump in my throat. Even when you know it is coming it is still a big, big wrench. D.

Hey Gav,
Hope your both feeling a bit better although I know it is not so simple. You may remeber I had a similar loss the day of the Northern Meet and although it's tough, life has to go on and you will already be realising what you DO have from the support I'm sure your receiving. Obviously this is from us both - please pass on our sincerest condolences to Ali. Matt |

Sorry to hear of this Gav and my condolences to Ali and yourself. Not a bad innings to be fair eh, my Grandpa passed away at that age in his sleep (great way to go I reckon).
Also, sorry for your loss too Dave, and you are so right in saying it is still a shock even when you know the inevitable is going to happen. One of the old 'Gents' who joined Hull Golf Club in 1935 died recently at the age of 98 and the flag was duly lowered and the hearse drove past the Clubhouse. He had been a 'Desert Rat' and had his own 'bat man' during the war lol. A character to say the least. All makes you think imo but memories live on forever. |

Just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words. Much appreciated. Even received a PM from a member who used to be on here a lot. The JD got put firmly in the cupboard and the wallowing self-pity got slapped hard on the arse. Thanks again guys.
Dave, please accept my sincere condolences.

Sorry to hear of your loss mate, as a musician yourself you may appreciate these wise words of Jim Morrison
"People fear death even more than pain. It's strange that they fear death. Life hurts a lot more than death. At the point of death, the pain is over." Good on you for playing on, i'm sure Ali's Dad would have been watching. |

Quote:
Each generation wants new symbols, new people, new names. They want to divorce themselves from their predecessors. Ali's Dad at 97 loved our daughter's mad hairsyles! Purple and blonde, bright red...he said we had to warn him of the next one in case it gave him a heart attack! I'll always remember that. I was seriously into Goth Punk Rock in my teens and early 20s. Been there and done it My Dad is now nearing 82 and he always says that every generation has the answer and every generation believes that they are right...no matter what happens. How true. We need to respect our older generation much more than we do in this country. The way many are treated is nothing short of disgraceful. We have a difficult day ahead on Monday saying goodbye to Ali's father, but it is tempered with huge admiration for a true gentleman and a real respect for his generation that saw us through times that we can't begin to imagine.

I must first add my condolencies to the others posted on here - then also go on to say how admirably you are dealing with the situation.
Ali's dad would be proud to see the kind words written by you on here I am sure, and the band performance will be a long lasting memory. Hope the next few weeks get easier for you all. Best wishes to you, Ali and your family. Paul |

Paul, thank you.
Well the day went down in sunshine with a huge crowd including Sir Ken Morrison and wife, of Morrison's supermarkets in attendance. Ali's dad was an architect of some renown! Designed several notable bulidings in Yorkshire and beyond. We did the respectful thing, then went to a hotel and watched as several bottles of wine and a serious amount of whiskey disappeared. Us designated drivers enjoyed a soda water and coffee or 8! Huge respect to the family as all his kids stood up and gave their memories of their dad in very memorable speeches. Still feeling very sad but wanted to thank everyone on here who took the time to post such positive and caring messages. It has made me feel so much stronger and I have told Ali all about it, although she hasn't been able to look here herself yet. Played a gig this afternoon in aid of cancer research. Dedicated it to the great rock singer Ronnie James Dio who sadly died of stomach cancer a few days ago. As the post says, how life changes. Be yours for the better!
