My new toy - Track Day Car!!
Well, after taking the ///M3 to North Wealds track day last month, it has given me the 'track day' bug! However the new set of rears needed the following day made me realise that it is also an expensive business. I also didn't insure the car at North Wealds as there is nothing really to crash into, being an airfield type day. The insurance costs however start to rocket whjen you try and insure a £50k+ car to blast around Oulton Park
So, me and a mate decided to go halves on a cheap track car. Something that handled and went Ok. Something we wouldn't lose any sleep over if we dented it. Something that is cheap to run and something that doesn't need expensive insurance. Our main aim is to make each track day as cheap as possible. So we bought this: Peugeot 306 S16 - it has already been modded...... Engine: Standard engine fitted with GTi6 manifold & injectors, Induction Kit, Uprated hoses, Oil Cooler mounted behind front grille, Solid lower engine mounts, Decat kit & larger bore exhaust, New clutch & battery fitted. Transmission: Standard 5 speed box fitted with Quick Link remote joints and short shift kit. Suspension/Chassis: OMP top and bottom braces at the front, OMP bottom brace at the rear, Lowered & reconditioned rear subframe, Adjustable coilovers, Gaz adjustable Shocks. Braking: Slotted and vented discs, Mintex track pads, ABS disconnected, Braided Hoses. Interior: All interior trim stripped out, Safety Devices Roll Cage, Corbeau seats, Five Point Harnesses. Bodywork: Sunroof removed and plated up, Fibreglass bonnet on quick release mounts. Wheels: Set of Mi16 alloys with cut slicks, Set of alloys with full slicks, Set of S16 alloys with road tyres for wet days. The car came complete with a Brian James twin axle trailer that is very light and in perfect condition. This means that we can tow the car to track days and not have to worry about getting it home again if something breaks and we only paid £2500 for the car AND trailer OK, the car needs some tidying up and fettling to make it look a bit nicer but it drives superbly. The chassis is just so stiff, you can cock the rear wheel up when turning in sharply under braking. Just seems great fun and even if we were unlucky and trashed the car, it must be worth the money in parts alone! The first job is to brace the bonnet as it is sagging in the centre making the top corners lift - we may also get the sunroof welded properly and then skim over and spray the roof black to match the bonnet. It i no oil painting for sure, but it certainly puts a smile on your face when you sit in it and give it a blast A few pics below....... Last edited by M3-FAST; 05-11-2010 at 06:25 AM.. |

I used to have a 306 in a lowlier spec but the chassis and steering were fantastic. One of the most reliable and best screwed together cars I've had as well! |

In the thrid pic. Paul the Pug looks perfectly 'normal' lol.
A comprehensive list of mods to say the least! I'm sure you're going to have lots of fun in that car - nice one. |

Hope so Helen, it's all a bit of fun really - gonna give it an oil change etc as it has been standing for 12 months without use and then book a day in it. Been out for a pint with my mate tonight and already planned it's first improvements! Sunroof properly welded up and then filled/skimmed over - then sort out the fibreglass bonnet fitment and spray them both satin black. May also do the alloys black as well. Then get the first track day booked and see how it drives |

To be honest Carl, I half expected you to have been at North Wealds as Baris organised it all and I know you and him are mates.
The DXB would have been at home sliding around that airfield Not sure where we are going with the Pug - maybe Oulton Park or Mallory Park - both quite close. Want to tidy it up and do a few jobs first. Change the oil, etc.. as it has been standing unused for a year or so. |

I agree, the surface is not great but the day was fun and they were a great bunch of guys, and made me feel me, as a newbie very welcome
Didn't realise they did 1/4 mile runs there also - wouldn't have thought the braking area would be big enough or did you get on the main runway? Baris's M3 is awesome yes, and he certainly showed some good drifting skills on the day! |

Good choice on a fun car
Should try to end up on the same track some time. Plan to get mine on to RAF Colerne (nr Bath) at the end of the month for the first time. |

Yeah Stealths, LOL, at the time I couldn't believe I had a car with a set on ha ha - they were 15's and I thought they were big at the time. Not sure what year it was taken - I was trying to work it out earlier on. The car was a '90 spec with the facelifted lights and I think I bought it when it was about 6/7 years old. I had only just had it when that pic was taken as I fitted the fogs into the front bumper and painted the valance behind the centre cut-outs black shortly after buying it - I would guess about 1997 matey (how old were you then?) |
