Celebrity Weddings - the biggest joke in America
does this irk anyone else? recently Britney Spears and Kfed split up after a staggeringly long 1 year marriage. what a fuckin joke. who didnt see it coming?
also recently, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had probalby a multimillion dollar wedding in Italy. how long do you think they'll last together? if Tom+Katie split up, that expensive Italian wedding will entirely go to waste. all the pieces of clothing like dresses and shoes costing upwards of 20,000, all the jewlery, decorations, all the little shit that doesn't matter in the end - all money wasted. i'm just sick of the way celebrities behave - many of them think they are above everyone and can do or speak no wrong - ex. Tom Cruise and his scientology bullshit. but when you consider that one of these "joke" weddings that won't last, can feed, house, and school like 1000 poor families for 10 years, it just pisses me off. not trying to dictate how celebrities should spend their money, but the fact that these people spend ridiculous amounts of money on clothing that doesn't even look better than shit you can get for 1/20th of the price. i don't know. some rich people are extremely generous, like that guy who gave like 50 billion to the bill gates fund. but others find it better to spend their money on 10 mansions they live in 2 days out of the year. i dont even know how i'd react with that kind of money, but i cant ever see myself spending upwards of 10,000 on a pair of shoes. just ranting. thoughts? |

"That guy" who gave to the Bill Gates fund is Warren Buffet, and I believe he donated 37 billion (his networth is 42B: http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/C0R3.html). Bill Gates himself is worth 50 billion: http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/BH69.html
Sorry just wanted to set the facts straight on that one, not trying to be rude I agree with everything you said. Their lives are a joke and it's sad to see them get paid that much to begin with, and this extends to not just movie stars but sport celebrities as well. There are some good people, but in terms of all the BS news we see about so and so getting married, divorced, cheated on, weddings at exhorbant prices... everything's gotta be grande in their lives. And yes, everyone's free to spend their money as they wish, but there's a difference between above average, grande, and then just flat out insane and ridiculous. And the sad thing is that teenagers follow these people's lives and make them their idols. Someone who can only get by on looks and flashing their bodies has absolutely no talent IMO. It's become the norm and it's pathetic. Woah wait I'm getting off topic am I? Not quite; unfortunately this one subject just opens up so many other related subjects that, together as a whole, affect society, our perception of celebrities, and how nutty the world has become.

i have given up on trying to rationalize rich people's excessive spending and completely unreasonable decisions and actions. i just accepted that that's what they do and that's how they live. they *are* different people than us -- they have shitload of money.

all the money they spent gets put into the economy. just because they spend it in ways you dont agree with doesnt make it wrong. if it makes them happy and they can do it more power to them. i personally dont give a shit.

The ones that are REALLY stupid are those who buy all that celebrity gosip magazines, i.e. Star, People and shitload of others. they come out weekly and some people buy them regularly just to read about celebs. isn't that stupid? You lve in the getto and read about millions celebs spend.

I don't think it's sad that celebrities do it, I think it's sad that Americans gobble it up.
*edit* I'm an American, so don't think I'm some kind of hater..well... :whoops: .. I don't watch TV very often (south park, futurama re-runs or DVD's of my favorite wholesome shows.... like Star Trek. hahaha).

You're missing the big picture ... it's all for marketing. The publicity this crap generates gets them out in front of the public. Britney will milk the nasty koocher pics/divorce gossip while she "works" on her new album so that her name is still fresh when the first single comes out.
Tom's publicity team is still trying to do damage control. What better way to not make him look like a kook to middle american women (his target demographic) than to have a storybook wedding and pop out a kid? Makes him look normal. Gets family values middle america to accept him again. A guy I know has a great theory about Scientology. Yeah, it's bat shit crazy, but it's also makes great business sense. Think about it, it's recognized as a church by the IRS. Who are it's biggest members? Celebrities that make a ton of cash. Now if you're a celebrity, with piles of cash how better to launder it? You can donate large chunks, and then the Church of Scientology can turn around and provide you with legal teams, publicists, etc etc. You get the services you normally would have to spend money on, but now you get to write off the donation. I don't know if they actually do it or not, but it would be an awesome scam. Cover it up with enough alien mumbo jumbo so that people are too afraid to look real close at what you're really doing. |

But it's not just Americans anymore; it's affecting the WORLD. The West is picking up on it. You know the we-despise-the-USA-but-we-also-want-to-be-like-them syndrome? When I was a kid I remember watching innocent insinuations of sexual themes and love portrayed by a female actor's shyness and what not while watching foreign films (Arabic, Indian, etc.). Love was portrayed through smiles, a kiss on the hand, holding hands, light hugs... no outright French kissing. Fast forward to today... those foreign countries have imitated American movies and in the process the sexuality has become more open, flagrant, and acceptable. It's not at the same level as the USA, but when people from those countries see the new shows or movies they're really surprised, like "wow what happened to the days when..." ?

As someone who is coming up in the entertainment industry, it is my opinion that the star system is slowly declining. It might take a whole other generation before it sticks but I think that is where it is heading.
Film earnings are going down, and star salaries are going up. That is not a solid relationship. Budgets are going to start decreasing and the first item in the budget to get the chop will be the outrageous star salaries. It used to be that having a star that you pay 20 million in your flick will gaurantee you an extra 100 million at the box office - but that isn't the case anymore. People are starting to value content over faces. The new james bond franchise saved about 20million by hiring daniel craig but still made an assload of money (of course it is a major franchise, but the trend is starting). It is already ingrained in all generations above the age of 13 that stars are stars so it might take another generation to change the way it works. |

One generation teaches the next...
Might take another generation? Mmmmh not so sure. That next generation will learn from the current one. I doubt anything will change other than small realignment. Oh well, its the way of the world. Each generation is marginally worse than the previous one if anything. Nothing absolutely nothing is taboo anymore. I think celebrities are the way they are and will be untill the day the masses stop worshiping them. I could care less what they are doing. I think all parents have a duty to educate their children on what is important in life, things that really matter, why other people and how you treat them matter. Welcome to the ME generation. Its all ME, ME, ME.... ad infinitum. Yuk!

Bill Gates is currently worth 56 Billions and Warren Buffet at $52bil.
I estimated that if a person spends $1000 a day, it would take him/her 2.78 years to spend a million. So to spend $1bil it would take 2,780 years (or about 28 generations). So with Bill Gates' money, it would take about 1,568 generations to spend that much (assuming people live to 100). Then again Warren and Bill are donating almost all of their money to charities which is great!! |

Dude, who are Tom and Katie? Turn off the TV, or get a DVR and only watch what you want.
