How differentials work - must watch

Here's how our crappy 335i differentials work.

Excellent video, no? I'll pass the torch... let's see who can find a video just as well made that explain LSD.

Enjoy,

-Walter

PS=Notice at the end how they didn't say "do not attempt this - performed by professionals on a close circuit". None of this bull needed back then.

I can't see the vid here at work but i think it's been posted before if I'm remembering it correctly. It's a good vid.
Is it the one with pencils or tinker toys?
I took a quick clip of how the Wavetrac LSD worked in my car with transfering the power to the ground.

Back during a simpler time, they had time to explain how things really worked.

There is a good show on the Science Channel that does a pretty good job of explaining things like this.

Great video. It just shows how pathetic it is that BMW does not offer the option of an LSD in non-M cars.

Hehe, glad you guys enjoyed it as much as I did. I feel like explaining how open diffs work to the whole world now.

Mr.5, this video did not involve pencils or similar props. Did you get a chance to see it from home? If they're different videos, could you share the one you were referring to if you find it? Your video demo was pretty cool. Did you actually drive forward with a normal car jack on one side, or was that a special jack made to roll? Balls of steel either way.

This makes me beg the question: Why can't we weld the spiders together and make it Posi?

It might seem like a joke to do that to a BMW...but why not?

Welding diffs is nothing new, and something I actually have experience with...just hesitant to do to my precious 335.
I've welded diffs in 3 trucks, 4 muscle cars, 2 golf carts and it works perfectly. A differential is a differential is a differential.

Granted, the inside tire spins/chirps when cornering, but why not do this?

I'd much rather have Posi for free than get a LSD for $2500.

this video shows what we have in a 335i, an (open) differential. A Limited Slip Differential is a next step in evolution

I hear your point. Very common in the DSM world... makes the drivetrain last longer on 6k rpm AWD launches. Don't ask how I know.

It is the vid that I was thinking of. I couldn't exactly remember what they used. they used sticks and tinker toys to fit in the sticks for the dif.
I did use a jack stand. I made sure that the wheels were pointed in the right direction and it rolled fine.

This is a pretty cool video that shows how the wavetrac works. It kind of takes a while to load.
