squeal when moving very slowly

Hi chaps,

After breaking to a standstill or a slow crawl (auto - no accelerator applied) on occasions I am experiencing a loud repetitive squeal when moving forwards.

Not sure what side or indeed front or rear - sounds stereo.

Could it be the brakes binding/rubbing still even though they are not applied?

Any suggestions are welcome.

if this is what is think it is, its a well know problem that i and others have. its usually from the rear mine is n/s, and happens when you drive off from a stop. its like a squealing sound.its to do with the brakes and sensor wearing down. dealer said i need new brakepads and sensor even though i said to them it has not been flagged up on the computer. not covered under warrenty as its wear and tear, so i told the dealer u best put my car back together cos i am not paying for new brakes and sensor when the computer says i still have enough miles on them. might take it to a recommended local and see if they can sort it.

I have had this issue as well. The dealer replaced the pads and oiled the calipers. It fixed the issue for awhile and now it has started up again. It gets louder the longer you go without fixing it. Good luck! Keep us posted on what they tell you.

Okay, thanks lads.

My rear brake pads are due - have about until 09/10 (think Im going to do the discs also).

Will keep you posted about the noise.

Mine does this too, N/S rear. Been back to the dealers three times and they say 'no fault found'

. If anyone has a cause/fix I would love to know.

Just to update this thread - I have changed the rear discs and pads myself last weekend (went EBC standard vented discs and EBC yellow stuff pads).

I also adjusted the hand brake. Noise so far has gone as far as I can tell.

What adjustment did you do to the handbrake?

There is a knurled adjuster in the hub behind the discs. On the passenger side it is upwards to tighten and on the drivers side it is downwards to tighten. Tighten all the way and then reverse 8 clicks. This should be enough.

Before you adjust the hand brake shoes, you have to get behind the handbrake leaver gaiter (pinch the gaiter and pull and this will give you sufficient access with a long screwdriver) and push in the lock (it is on a coil/spring) and goes back quite far until it locks in place – you will know when it does.

Once adjusted at the hub with the knurled adjusters you can un-latch the lock back to where it was.

I can get the exact instructions if you want from my Haynes manual.

Discs off (if you need to know how to take the pads off [which you do need to] then this job isnt for you). You will need a BFH to get the discs off!
