I see no correlation because there is no tethered jailbreak any more: the Spirit JB provides untethered JB across all iPhone OS products. And because the tethered JB is no longer relevant, mentioning it is not constructive and I concluded you were implying the OP's product is limited to a tethered JB.

Requesting serial number may provide insight to warranty status and production date...I can't think of any other reason off the top of my head.

Anyway, I seem to have derailed this thread, sorry OP. Once I know you have seen this reply, I'll delete all my posts on this thread to clean it up.
