gearbox paddles

does anyone know how the paddles on the latest cars work, do they only push or pull or both as the earlier ones, just curious.

They've changed them now. I believe one side changes up and the other side down.

the both push and pull, ultimately you press down on either side of wheel for low gears and up for higher gears,

my 2010 330d had gear up on one side, gear down on the other (you cannot use one paddle for both up and down)....like a proper gearbox!

Sounds like an improvement

Although if you only have one arm it's not so good...

Its a backwards step because you cant nudge them from the front, you can only pull them from behind

i think the general consensus is that other paddles on other cars do not, and have not ever been bi-directional

and the fact that they are now pull only is a massive plus in my mind..

i would be interested in a retro-fit to be honest

Its something that probably should be standardised I reckon.
Years ago, didnt there used to be different 4 or 5 MT gate configurations between mfrs?

My preference is left pull = down, right pull = upshift but I can live with the push / pull enough not to try and re-wire

With no push on the new cars is the actual paddle assembly new or do you just get some redundant buttons?

I prefer it when the paddles are on the column, and not the wheel, makes it a lot easier when pushing on.

Are the paddles on the steering colum of the new ones then?
It would be nce for them to stay in 1 place rather than rotate with the wheel

No, but Ferraris, lambos etc have them on the column and it just makes so much more sense, so you always know where + and - are??

You needn't be shackled to the OEM setup.
This was one of the first things I did - a bit scary 'cos you need to remove the airbag (do a search) but ultimately pretty easy to do.
I now have pull function on left to go down, right to go up, and have disabled the push function on both sides.
Much more intuitive (and fun)
