New BMW for only $2,500
Ah, the 60's. I was born the same year this ad was being published!!
Check this vintage advertising for BMW's "2-door sedan". It doesn't say there, but I'm sure it's the BMW 2002. Other interesting things: > They were focusing on the affordability of the car, power (105 HP) and the fuel economy. > ED was available. > BMW was spelled out (Bavarian Motor Works). > Car and Driver was already a prestigious magazine. |

Look at how they talk about in the article about how $1,000 more is so ungodly much! Heh. Times change. That's for sure. |

That's a pretty good price. 10,000 less than what we're paying now.

I don't know about '67. But my '78 Benz which was $50,000 in '77 works out to about $190,000 when I calculated it 2 or 3 years back, probably more now.

What I like about the ad is the English is about as refined as you'll find in a typical forum post. Short choppy sentences, run-ons, political incorrectness.
Nothing like today's overedited, polished, and group-tested then approved ad copy. |

- It was compared to a Leica, another German engineering icon. Too bad today BMW is no longer Leica's equivalent in cars. - It was sold through a third party importer - BMW North America had yet to be founded. |

Was it '67? I didn't see a date on the ad. I don't think $2500 wasn't exactly middle class money for a car in '67, like 40k is now.
My Mom likes to tell me over and over about her 67 Camaro RS that she bought with every conceivable option (she says right off the showroom floor like that's supposed to be something great ... just means you got taken) for $1250. Sadly that car would now be worth 80+k as the stupid baby boomers keep spending way more money than they should for icons of their youth. Whereas a decent 1600 is worth a fraction of that. |
