You like physics? Short essay..........
Archimedes Archimedes was born in Syracuse, and the son of a Greek aristocrat astronomer. Little was know about his early life except that he studied for a time in Alexandria, Egypt. He is given credit for being the father mathematical physics and integral calculus. He is well known for his formulation of the hydrostatic principle know as the Archimedes Principle which states that an object immersed in liquid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the displaced liquid. This principle applies to floating and submerged bodies and to all fluids such as liquids and gases. It explains not only the buoyancy of ships and other vessels in water but also the rise of a balloon in the air and the apparent loss of weight of objects underwater. He approximated the area of circles and the value of ¼ by summing the areas of inscribed and circumscribed rectangles. He then took smaller and smaller rectangle areas and summed them to find the areas. He found even smaller volumes of several shapes. This was beginnings of calculus almost 2000 years later. Other works included: the equilibrium of planes (or centers of gravity) that establishes the law of the lever, the quadrature of the parabola, and the sand-reckoner which addresses place-value system of notation to express huge numbers. His contributions also include inventions of many war machines, pulley systems, planetarium, water screw, and possibly burning mirrors. He played an important role in the defense of Syracuse against the siege laid by the Romans in 213 BC by his constructions of war machines. His machines held off the Roman armies of Marcus Claudius Marcellus for three years. When the city was taken, the general gave orders to spare the scientist, but Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier. In many areas of mathematics as well as in hydrostatics and static mechanics, his work and results were not surpassed for over 1500 years. He was one of the greatest mathematician and scientist recorded in history.

How about Galileo Galilei?
Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy and obtained his formal education in Florence. He initially studied medicine, but found mathematics to be more interesting. He is known as the founder of modern day physics and the experimental scientific method. He developed a simple way to understand how nature worked by performing careful observations and concluding generalizations from his observations. Galileo studied time and motion properties of a pendulum which later enabled many timed measurement experiments such as on gravity. His experiments on gravity led to the idea of inertia that later inspired Isaac Newton’s first law of motion. His most famous experiment disproved Aristotle’s commonly accepted theory that heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects. Galileo proved that objects fall at the same rate regardless of their mass. This experiment deviated from the widely accepted concept of Aristotle theory. One of Galileo’s greatest works is his invention of an advanced telescope that enabled improved magnification of objects many times. His telescope enabled the discoveries of Jupiter, the Milky Way, and different phases of Venous. His discoveries were the first to provide evidence to support the Copernican Theory, which indicated that planets revolve around the sun. His discoveries conflicted with Catholic geocentric dogma that earth is the center of the universe. As a result, Galeleo Galilei was charged with heresy and placed under house arrest until he died in 1642.
