Spare wheel/tyre & jack
Guys & Gals,
I need a spare wheel and jack for my motor (E92 with 19" 225 wheels). BMW want in excess of £208 for just a wheel/tyre. There's a wheel & jack kit but that's more than £240+ with no definite lead time (until you place an order, which can't be cancelled). Buying the wheel and jack seperately from BMW adds up to over £280!!!! Are there any alternatives? I'm running factory fitted RTFs at the moment...should I even bother with a spare? Would relying on BMW assist be sufficient? Or should I get a cheap wheel/tyre combo from my local tyre place and source small jack from Halfords or something? What are the panel's thoughts on this? |

Hi
Many cars run without a spare wheel these days. As I have mentioned on earlier posts, my wife has a courtesy car at present, a Ford C Max - no spare tyre, just a continental mobility kit!!! Virtually everyone has some form of breakdown cover. I also have had my (non-RFT) tyres Ultrasealed and carry a compresser and some tyreweld. I think that BMW dealers have frightened the life out of some people with their BS re: RFT's. Jeff |

If you're going for a jack/spare combo, make sure you have taken the wheels off at home as they are a bitch to remove!! I posted previously about this and the advice was to put some copper grease around the spigot. You would have no hope roadside IMHO if you've not had them off before.

My reason for wanting a spare is that I am going to be doing some hefty mileage and a spare would keep me mobile in the event of a flat...
Just wondering if I could get my local wheel/tyre shop to hook me up with a basic wheel that would suffice as a spare and I could get a little jack from the likes of Halfords or ECP etc... I feel uneasy about driving for miles and miles in unfamiliar territory without a spare...am I being silly and would BMW Assist be all the cover I need should the worst happen? |

I would get the M Mobility kit for around £70. Its OEM and would at least get you to a tyre shop - Its all that M cars come with for a flat. You also have the added security of BMW Assist as well.

The mobility kit isn't for RFT.
RFT's will hold together for miles and miles after receiving a puncture, you might not necassarily be able to tell that you have a puncture right away, but when the pressure decreases the tyre warning light will go on allowing you to check the tyre out and decide if there is a tyre outlet/dealer nearby or if you want to contact BMW assist. |

This was only around xmas 09. Part 36110445045 is item 1, ie. wheel / tyre / valve fitted, balanced and ready to go. Its a special Continental tyre. |

BTW its 200miles at 50mph AFAIK? Just read your post - sorry, if you still have RFTs just stick with no spare, and you can't use mobility kits / gunk with RFTs - there's no point! I'd only get a spare if you dump the dastardly RFTs.. unless abroad, then I'd want a spare. Imagine calling for help on the continent - "but ros-beef, it is friday afternoon??? please call back on Monday" You just need a 17" steel with the 5 off 120PCD holes and the BMW space saver dimensions, i.e. 3.5 x 17 ET8. I'm sure you can find a steel roughly to those sizes? Last edited by doughboy; 06-16-2010 at 08:48 AM.. |

NFI but it costs £210 or thereabouts.
That's a bit more comforting. EDIT: http://www.bridgestone.eu/tyres/run-...t-tyre-faqs#02 Q: How far can I drive after I am alerted to a deflated tyre? A: Bridgestone Runflat tyres are typically capable of travelling for a maximum of 80km at 80km/h after a tyre suffers deflation. However, the vehicle manufacturer may specify a different speed or distance for RFT tyres fitted to specific vehicles and owners should consult their vehicle handbook for details. That's 50miles@50mph Quote:

Steely should be fine, any wheel will have a max load rating, as long as its the same or heigher than what it says on the back of your OE wheels (should be cast in the alloy) I'll have a look at my spare tonight. |

I assumed (wrongly!) that you had swapped to non RFT and that was the reason for the thread!

I know it's probably a bit anal and a steely would do the job but I dont want to chance it... But the information from your wheel would still be useful and could well help others out. Heh, I am indeed still on RFT but I will be out in the sticks so wanted to chuck a spare in the boot just in case the worst should happen. |

Apologies if this has been asked, but surely on 6 cylinder e92s a 17" wheel from other manufacturers will fit. Obviously not all, but does anyone know of ones that will? Vauxhall, VW?
Thanks! |
