Key Fob - Not Working

My Key Fob wont lock or unlock the car. I purchased the car like it and thought that the key would need charging, however this appears not to be the issue. I rang the dealers about buying a new key fob and apart from the shock of the price the guy said that it may not be the key, but could be the sensor. Has anybody had this happen on their car? I am assuming it's not a fuse as the doors lock \ unlock on the button on the dash. Any pointers please guys
