extended warranty - should I buy it?

Hi,

I have 2007 328 coupe. My warranty will be expired on December. I am thinking to drive my current car for next 2~3 years, so I need a protection plan. My dealer quoted me $3050 for warranty, $2095 for maintance.

I am planning to buy only warranty for two years.

What do you guys suggest? Should I buy maintance or warranty? I am thiking warranty since my car already had troubles with engines before.

Please advise me.

Thanks,

I think warranty, not maintenance is a good move.

But the price sounds high--did you see this price on the printout from your key? Some dealerships mark the warranties up--one told me they don't make much $$$ off of them, they make $$$$$$ off of the 3rd party ones, and one dealer tried to sell me a 3rd party, not the BMW. That's probably like a restaurant asking if you have another credit card when you take out your AMEX.

I saw the printout twice from two dealerships, $3490 for 7/100 gold on a 335. I plan on getting it, my last visit to the dealership probably would have been 3k out-of-warranty. Nobody can say for sure that warranty repairs would exceed $3490 in years 5,6,7, but it's not that hard for a BMW to do that....

When my warranty is up I'm going 3rd party warranty...BMW is too expensive.

I got 5 year 100,000 miles warranty for $ 2,081 which is basically their cost and 6year 100,000 warranty is only $ 400-500 more. It is totally worth it. If anything under the hood breaks, it will cost north of $1,000. If anything engine related or transmission(auto) related breaks, it will cost you at least $ 2,000 or more. Try to knock out at least $ 500 from their asking price and you will be good to go. If you have to choose only one I will say warranty. I believe any warranty longer than 6 years is Fidelity not BMW warranty.

I am considering a used e90 to replace my E46 in a couple of months and will be contacting dealerships about warranty prices. Can you purchase a warranty from a dealer over the phone?

Mercury warranty, 100K / 5 years, no deductible, is $2900.
Had it before on 2 S4's and the Mini S.
I got it again.

You may want to check out this thread http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...87#post5291287.

It sounds like BMW of Macon will give you the best price. $1695 for maintenance is tough to beat, and I'm betting their extended warrany prices are the best option out there also.

I might get the extended warranty but certainly not maintenance. There's no way I'd spend 2 grand in 2 years on maintenance stuff, even including brakes. Also, unless you drive an obscene amount of miles a year you can just completely disregard the mileage part of the deal - it means absolutely nothing and is just meant to look impressive...

Extended maintenance is worth the money only if you drive alot. I end up with close to 100,000 miles in 5 years. For me, it is no brainer. 2 brake services and a couple of regular maintenance and I am already saving money.

Any chance you have iDrive, in which case you're getting quoted for a Platinum plan 7/100? My price is for Gold 7/100 on a 335. The 335 is a higher class than the 328, so it seems that only $500 more for the 335 is too little.

Both dealerships I went to read my key, printed out some papers which had every price for every plan. Both said $3490 for 7/100 Gold. Neither would discount and they said that's not to say that no dealers discount, just that they don't know which would and there's not a lot of markup on them (so they say)...

Can you purchase the warranty after you car has gone over 50k? Can I purchase the warranty from another dealership out of state which may be cheaper and still take it to the local dealership?

You supposedly cannot purchase an extended warranty from BMW once your regular warranty expires at 50k miles, although I've heard of some exceptions with a clause for "pre-existing conditions." BTW, BMW extended warranties can be purchased for up to 7 years past the in service date; the CPO warranty, which is like BMW's Gold extended warranty, only goes out 6 years.

IMO, the extended maintenance is only worth it on an M Car, and then only if you expect to need a brake job during the period to which the extended maintenance period applies. The extended warranty, however, would be a good deal in my case, especially of you can fold it into your car loan at the interest rate you paid when you bought the car.

My understanding is after 45 mos. or 45,000 miles, you cannot purchase it anymore. And yes, you can buy it anywhere and it will be good at any BMW dealership.

According to BMW's warranty one-pager, if you are out of warranty you are still eligible to purchase the Powertrain Plus plan.

What is the powertrain plus plan and what's the differences between that and the regular extended warranty?

+1 Mine has expired, but my car has been reliable, no issues. I'd probably worry more with a 335i than your 328i.
