you are a speck of dust in the universe
no, scratch that, this makes it seem more like you're a half of something a million bajillion times smaller than an atom

Aren't your an atheist? I find it funny that an atheist would be so quick to conclude the alien life exists. Afterall, no proof of it exists. For the record I believe it is likely that alien life exists in the universe, but as I said there is no proof.
The Drake Equation, which people like to cite as being able to predict the mathematical probability of the existence of ETI in our galaxy, is of course fundamentally flawed as most of the values for the variables in that equation aren't known and are at educated guesses at best. The equation also makes the mistake of assuming that life does exist (see the fl and fi variables). Drake gives both of these variables positive values, based entirely on guesswork and witchcraft. Given that point of the equation is to determine the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy, the equation is self defeating, for any positive value for these variables will result in a value greater than 0. |

LOL Drake equation man that takes me back to sophomore year taking a class about searching for life...it was interesting but I couldn't believe it was an actual class - seemed more like a History channel show, which I guess is fitting, because I do see the professor from time to time on "The Universe" and the like on HC.
One of the essay questions on the final was to draw something called a "ramjet" which is a type of hypothetical spaceship that scoops up matter as it flies and uses it for fuel, so it theoretically has a range only limited by the matter floating around in space. |

It's amazing how in our extreme insignificance that we still assign so much significance to Brangelina and Lindsey Lohan and Lady Gaga. If we are indeed the only life in the entire universe; the only intelligence in all that incredibly vast expanse, then we should really be ashamed of ourselves.

Probability that any life exists outside of our planet is .9999999 ≈ 1. I never said anything about intelligent life, although based on the sheer size of the multiverse and number of galaxies it is quite probable. |

plus, don't you have any nostalgia? it would be sick if earth was the center to human intergalactic space colonies. something always to fall back too. but we should clean the gene pool before expanding. we don't need more human filth :P unless, you send em all to one planet, and don't build any space ports.

Yeah I learned that in astronomy classes when I first started college. Stuff like that really trips me out because it makes you think. I mean it's not just like the small, normal stuff. This thinking is on a grand scale! I know many people can't even begin to comprehend it because it just blows their minds.

On the one hand, you are convinced that there must be no god based on the fact that there is no proof one. No proof, no god. You call people who think otherwise idiots. On the other hand, you are convinced that there must be alien life based on the fact that there is no proof of any. No proof, must be aliens. You call people who think otherwise idiots. Clearly you don't see the inconsistency in your thought process. Either you accept that things can exist without having physical proof of them or you don't. For the record, I'm not particularly religious. I bounce between agnosticism and perhaps some sort of pantheism. Last edited by radix; 07-25-2010 at 03:13 AM.. |
