Oil Analysis Report from Blackstone Labs

This is the first oil change on the car.
I scheduled an appointment and when I showed up, the SA took my key and told me that I had another 2500 miles to go before my first oil change. I said I'd still like it done under the once a year warranty coverage since it had been almost 15 months since I got my car (9/30/05).

Here is what they sent back:

I plan on showing this to my SA and seeing what he has to say out of curiosity sake.
I plan to continue with the schedule factory maintenance schedule and get Blackstone Oil Analysis Reports on them.

I sent my 820 mile break-in oil change to Blackstone last week.

Regarding yours, it's actually real good for 1st 16K miles with no change, imho. My biggest question has to do with your Manganese...at 28 it's much higher than what I've seen in other Blackstone posts here? What does this indicate if anything?

Not having your original oil changed for over 15,000 miles can't be a good thing. Many on this forum have their first oil change performed right after break-in. I've always changed oil @ 5,000 mile increments and never had any oil related issues with any of my vehicles.

I, on the other hand, have always had my oil changed on schedule, at the recommended BMW intervals (15,000 miles/one year), and have never had any oil-related issues on any of the 3 BMW's I have owned. The debate continues.

Hmmm now I wonder when I should get mine changed. I did a search on all the "blackstone" threads (there's only 4-5 of them) and everyone has a conflicting opinion. GREAT! :P

How do you go about having an oil analysis done?
Do you just mention it to your SA, and he sends it in? Does the tech save a vial of the used oil for you to send the lab yourself?

It is safe to say that changing the oil more often can only help, not hurt the engine. For a lot of people changing the oil every 5000 miles is well worth the extra money. If you change the oil yourself it costs about $30. For me this is very cheap engine insurance on a $30k+ car.

As the Blackstone report suggests, it seems that these are most useful if you have a couple of them in a row to compare to each other, then you can see if something unusual is going on. FWIW, compared to other oil analyses posted here yours doesn't seem bad at all for a 15K change.

I changed my oil at around 4K. I'm firmly in the camp that believes in an early initial oil change.

Go to Blackstone's website and order a kit.. They'll mail u the kit and you have the SA fill the bottle with some oil and give it back to u so u can mail it back to blackstones.

Forget the wear metals. A TBN of 1.0? I wouldn't put that oil in my lawn mower--and I don't like my lawn mower.

Just curious,

Why does BMW require oil change only after approximately 25000km while other manufacturer eg Lexus recommend oil change every 15000km? Assuming we put exact same oil into both cars.

They probably calculated the loss ration of having some engines die at 150,000 versus giving every single BMW owner an extra oil change at 5,000.

They are a business afterall...

I was in that camp on my turbo'ed integra. Changed it every 3K.

Now I am more curious to see what happens with the car as is with the recommended warranty changes. I will be getting rid of the car when it hits 49K anyway, so I'm not too concerned about anything failing and costing me out of pocket.
