Axle / Half Shaft Upgrades **Info Needed**

I am in the process of trying to find out more info on some upgrades to our half shafts since there are quite a few that have broken. I am looking for the measurements of the outer diameter of the cage and the window size (where the ball goes). This will make the process easier, then I can get the work done on my shafts and DIY the project for the forum. It shouldn't be a tough job to swap the axles, so I think many can do this in the garage.

I will get to my set on Saturday next week if you can wait. Using the beefier M3 shafts now.

Would you be willing to take the CV apart to measure?

you need a special BMW tool to remove/install the axel if I remember correctly, it's a pain in the ass

Definitely do not. This is a universal CV on the inside simply being held on by (6) M10 torx bolts. The outside is held on by one M27 collar nut. The axle is then simply pushed through the hub. The BMW special tool is basically a clamp that attaches to the bolts on your hub and it "pushes" the axle through the hub. I suspect any axle removal tool will work. I think I could swap them in under 1 hour per side depending on exhaust removal.

You could also use an impact hammer to knock the axle out of the hub as well. This is what we used when installing the DP's in my XI.

I assume you will need some for the track. This is going to be a must upgrade as we push the drag strip times down into the 10s.

have u considered sending one of your broken axles to a driveshaft company like the driveshaft shop? most of those companies can remanufacture axles and make them stronger without any special details or prices...

I wish I woulda known this when I was pulling Dans axles out and rebuilding them (ultimateendz). I had the joints apart and would have measured them for you.

How much would a job like that cost? Wondering if I could get a pair and send them down to you for a rebuild to strengthen them (did you just rebuild or use stronger materials)?

That is still up in the air. I think it would depend on what people were willing to pay.

Ok, with so many snapping half shafts/axles I got what is needed and we will be moving forward. This will be a full upgrade to the race, cage, and bar on our axle to handle a lot of horsepower. I will write a full review on the parts and DIY the project as always for the forum.
