What brand HD Camcorder to Buy

Looking for a new High Def camcorder to shoot some video. What type would be best for and good movie like quality? Looking to spend under 1,000 if possible.

Thanks.

I bought a $300 JVC 1080p... its OKAY... picture has a weird lag effect when you pan too fast, and autofocus is alright... I believe all sub $600 cameras are like this.

Best camera you can buy under $1k, Sony brand, incredible picture quality, stellar optics, ample recording on built-in memory (Memory Stick expandable), crisp sound, truly awesome and it's super-compact and perfect for traveling. And it's $300 cheaper than when I bought mine 6 months ago.

I use $150,000 Arri 35mm cameras for work so trust me

There are a few others out there, but this one is a pure pleasure to shoot on and the results are brilliant.

Only con I will cite about this camera is "ok" low-light sensitivity, but in this class of camcorder, it's fine for what it's meant to do.

I have a newer Canon (HG30 I think...). It was about $600 at Costco.
It does have a 60 gig hard drive but you can also use flash too. Takes awesome pictures and excellent video. It's quick to power up and start recording. I would say better quality than sony for indoor shots. One of my previous jobs I was a backup on AV and we used a couple of Sony's for recording presentations.

I think it's a good option before stepping up to the $2/3k plus pro models.

Another thing to consider is software. Each brand is bundled with different editing software. You might want to check that out and see which you'd like better.
Unless you have your own software and thats moot.

How is the image stabilization on these devices? I have a cheapie flip one that actually looks good after editing it picture wise and color wise (pinnacle studio ultimate) but the camera was fairly bouncy, to be expected. Im looking for one in this same range (prefer cheaper of course) with or without hard drive (have a couple 16gig flash cards). Mainly looking for something that can get a good HD picture without the bouncing (as when walking) and would prefer something that blocks wind better. Thanks. Sorry for thread jacking OP, but its close to still on topic

I ended up picking up a Canon HF S20... I have had about an hour to get to know some of the features... Its image quality is outstanding and night/low light is great. The 24p and cinema mode is awsome, looks just like a feature film. The stabalizer works great also.

Thanks for everyones input. Money well spent.
