Car overheated. Has my water pump failed? vids inside
Hey guys, my car overheated yesterday for the second time within the last 3 days. I would just pull over, turn it off and let it cool down. When I opened the hood, I noticed that there was some coolant that was released. Luckily for me I was only a few miles away from my house. I finally got home and scanned my car and had 2 codes. Both have something to do with my water pump. 2 weeks ago I also got a low coolant warning. I went to the dealer and picked up some coolant and just topped it off. Also, my car has been making this weird vibrating noise for about a minute after I go on a long drive and turn the car off for the last month or two. I put my car through the water pump cycle or flush thing and made a video and this is the weird vibrating noise I'm talking about. Tell me what you guys think. Has my water pump failed?

have it checked out. My friends 335 had a crack in his radiator and BMW replaced it.

Why don't you just pressure test the cooling system to see where the coolant is coming out from? BMW's usually crack the the radiator tanks or overflow tank. If it's a large crack and cannot hold pressure, then there is no way you can make it 40 miles.

The noise after the car is off is normal to cool the turbos.
I think the pressure test is a good idea.

But whatever you do, definitely don't drive it around until the issue is fixed or else its likely that you will be left stranded somewhere. Once coolant temps go too high, your dme will trigger a low power/low throttle limp mode which is decent enough for normal driving. The problem is that I can see irreparable damage being done with driving around with an overheating engine for too long. |

Totally, it's the only car that ever has a water pump go out. You should stay away.

Yeah but the sound i hear in his video is not normal , sounds like a pump that is running dry and then seizing or something , then starting again and seizing again.

If a rare water pump failure scares you away, then you definitely won't be shopping for an S4. Google: B8 S4 water pump
The Evo also had a recall on water pumps...I know, i had one pop the weeping hole while on a road course. Unfortunately, as someone else said, the accessories on a performance car are often weaker than the motor. My cache of spare parts for the track included pretty-much every accessory, belt. hose, etc.

Holy crap dude WTF?
That noise is ridiculous. There is a very unnoticeable noise when the car is off, slight humm. <--- NORMAL Your car sounds like the 4th of july/ jack hammer... something is definitely broken. |

any ideas what it could be? i was doing some water pump flush thing that i read about in a thread. it goes on for like 12 minutes so it was just this sound constantly. when it happens when i turn my car off its only for like 30 seconds. the dealer wrote vibrating noise-aftermarket equipment installed-coilovers wtf?? and also..when I WOT the car now and come to a stop you can hear the fan pretty clearly for like 5 seconds and then it goes quiet again.. is that normal?

I would stop with the pump flush, I think your pump is toast in some fashion. The pump recirculates coolant through your turbos after you shut it off (the car)to cool them down slowly. Naturally, when you WOT the car, engine is going to heat up, so I suspect your fans are kicking on cause your coolant temp exceeded a certain temp... I'd be concerned about your thermostat and the rest of your cooling system components at this point. If you have BT tool, check your coolant temps and see how they are responding. Eitherway bring it back to dealer. |

I had an over heating issue, it was a battery issue with my terminals, although my car operated perfectly fine. Electric water pump is better than a mechanical pump in case it seizes up and that can cause havoc on some cars with cams connected to that pulley.
