Paranoid, or would you do this?

I was grabbing lunch with a friend of mine and we were talking about cars. We happened to pass by an E92, so I was explaining how neat the angel eye headlights look and how they're (mostly) a BMW-unique thing.

We parked diagonal from a guy's nice 135i so he could have some room and piece-of-mind (I try not to park directly next to someone's nice car if I do not have to, but I like to park far away, too). My friend went to smoke a cigarette, so we stood outside of my car and I was telling her about the 135i.

We stood about 5 feet away and I was pointing/talking about how the dynamic xenons work and angel eyes: all that good stuff. Suddenly, I hear the car beep and a guy walks over to the car. I said to him, "Oh, sorry, we were just admiring your 135i." He said, "Ah, okay," and proceeded to go into his car, sort of "fumble around for things" without getting anything, then walked back into the restaurant that he was eating at. My friend noted "Did he just totally walk over here, act like he was getting something, then go back?"

Was he just being paranoid, or would you do that too if someone was admiring your car (but not in a suspicious manner)? I just found it kind of funny. He walked a pretty good way to get to his car, too.

I don't know why he did it, but that would be a pretty good way of letting someone know "please back off." If that was his intention....it's better than directly telling you to back off.

Then again, he might just be getting something from his car...not everyone is so into their cars!

i agree, its also a good way to let someone know what you are watching them, incase they had bad intentions. Think most of us would do something similar

I've done the same thing before.
Like the other guys said; it's a non-confrontational way of saying "I'm keeping an eye on you".

I think he wanted to go out there and make it clear that its his car, not to stop you from admiring it, but to try and show off to you guys.

He could have been letting you know he is watching you next to his car. It may have been paranoia, you never know what happened to the guy in the past. Maybe he's had his car broken into or stolen before. You never know, stuff like that gets to people sometimes. I know it really bothered me when my first car was broken into. But I'm paranoid about my cars anyway.

he was probably going to pull out that 9 from his glove compartment and lay some lead down. I have done something similar where I request a seat by the window that looks out to my car. Kids would come and point at the 135i, walk around it, talk to each other because this was Feb 08 when the 135i first arrived. I kept eating but kept an eye out as well.

the fact the car BEEPED (i.e. he had the alarm system fitted into the car) means he's a bit on the paranoid side, and he was just doing as people mentioned 'making it known he's watching you'

I've caught people admiring my cars lots of times, it's no big deal. Usually, people go out of their way to assure me they were just looking. The funniest was leaving a theater and seeing a family unloading from a station wagon. A teen-aged girl got out of the front passenger seat and told her little brother - 10 or so - "careful with the door, there's a nice BMW here." The kid says "Ah, screw the BMW!" The girl sees the lights flicker and me approaching and says with a mischievous grin "What was that again?" He says " I said..." notices her looking behind him, turns around "...nice BMW..." His sister cracks up.

Maybe he just thought he forgot his cell phone in the car but realized, after walking out there, that it was actually in his pants pocket. Or maybe he was going outside to pick up that kilo of cocaine he had stashed in the trunk, but saw you watching the car and assumed that you were either FBI or the DEA. He quickly asked you what you were doing (to try to cover up suspicion) and pretended to search around in his pockets, while actually getting his cell phone, so he could book the earliest return flight to Colombia.

We'll never know. . .

If two strangers were admiring/chatting up your girlfriend, wouldn't you walk over?

it's a nice way of saying "I'm keeping an eye on my car..."

People can be protective and touchy about their cars.
