Long Cranks and Limp Mode. 2FBF. Dealer Only Updated Software. BS?
Hey Guys,
So I've been having sporadic long cranks (5-7 seconds) for a few months now. I would say it only happens 1/4 of the time I start the car. I was at the track on Tuesday, and was going about 70 in 4th when the car started to lose power. I slowed down, and the car barely would go over 2500 RPM's. I got off the track, and let the car continue to run for about 5 minutes to cool down, and it was making funny noises and kind of shuttering. After turning off the car and turning back on 15 minutes later everything was fine. I never threw a check engine light. I took the car in yesterday, and they said they found code 2FBF and updated the software as a result. They didn't mention anything about the HPFP though. They kept the car overnight, and tried to start it this morning but of course did not get a long crank. So my question is, is HPFP failure still eminent, or could a software update be all that's needed to fix this?

I would say its immenent per my experience on this same issue and same step. They updated the software and it made it better for about 2 weeks then started long cranking again and then finally a month or so later it went out.
Not sure if its totally related or not buy my exhaust soot has declined immensely since they put the new HPFP in. Id be planning to see them again and then you'll get a new pump no question asked. |

I had the exact same thing going on...took it to Crevier in Santa Ana, CA and they said it was just the software that needed updating.
It was ok for a week, then started getting worse. Had long cranks and really rough starts. Took it to Long Beach BMW and they replaced the HPFP. Runs great again...but for how long? This is the car's second HPFP. |

the BMW policy is to update the software first. and if the problem persisted then they'll get the green light from BMWNA. the procedure is right. No BS.

My car was fine. No issues at all. I went in for regular maintenance, they updated my software and I started getting long cranks that were not there since my HPFP was replaced 5K miles ago. This really sucks. I don't know if its just co-incidence, but I went in with a perfect car came out with this nonsense.
