BMW driving procedure after adaptation resets?

I swear I read it in a technical bulletin somewhere that they described you need to go at least 60 MPH, keep it at a constant speed for like xx minutes, then repeat a few times. I even saw someone post something close to that recently, but can't find it.

Anyone know exactly what it is, or even better, have the link to the SIB?

Need to reset some things via the new Procede Command Center!

PS "Adaption" is not a real word!

* Bring the engine to the normal operating temperature.

* Drive the vehicle at a speed of between 50-60 mph and engine speeds of 2,000-3,000 rpm for approximately 3 minutes (use manual gear shifting, if needed).

* Let the engine idle for approximately 5 minutes.

I thought this was only for OBD readiness codes:

I think the best thing you could do is simply reset the desired adaption and just drive normally. Perhaps cruise for a few minutes then then start driving as you otherwise would. The other procedure mentioned above, IIRC, is to simply achieve cat readiness. Nothing to do with resetting adaptations.

This is what I was aware of, as well. I concur.

According to this Technical Bulletin:

http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B125506g.htm

It's for re-adapting the DME after re-programming as well....

But maybe I am reading it wrong.

I reset a few adaptations the other night and followed this procedure of driving between 50-60 mph for 5 mins and letting it then idle.

Then I drove the snot out of it!

My 6AT tranny definitely shifts better between 2nd and 3rd (I had an annoying long pause at light throttle boost)......the pause is completely gone now.

The gas pedal is more linear in the dreaded "D" mode whereas before it would not respond for the first 10% of throttle and then jerk into action afterwards....much smoother now.

The car idles a little better when warm, but my cold starts didn't improve too much.

I am curious to try the octane and knock adaptation resets, but don't want to be the first one to try this and screw something up.

In the end, there was not huge improvement.....just some small ones, especially the tranny which has not regressed to the long pause between 2nd and 3rd, so at least that was a worthwhile improvement that has lasted.

Regular shifting was buttery smooth right after the reset, but over the last two days, it has gone back to shifting hard as it re-learns and adapts to WOT runs with a tune.

I am really glad to see these features bundled into the procede command centre as now I don't have to lug my laptop around and use the BT tool to reset adaptations.

I think it's worth resetting things once in a while because I get the impression that sometimes the DME misadapts to the power levels a tune produces.

Thanks! Come to think of it, after I went in for service a month or so ago, and they did the mandatory software upgrade to my car for the fuel pump, all my issues started afterwards with lean AFR's and stuttering on partial throttle when I'm running on map 1 with the Procede... I wonder if they didn't do the proper procedures above afterwards, and that may be causing my issues? I don't get them though when running in valet mode...

I'm going to be resetting the AFR and lambda adaptations soon, so I'll do the above to be safe, and see how the car runs.

Also to note:

The last page of the above PDF also states instructions on how to re-adapt the DME.

Thanks, says the same thing as the SIB above you posted, except for this additional bit in bold which I'm not clear on:

* Car must be at operating temperature / warm
* Drive vehicle 50-60mph with 2000-2500rpm for about 3min (use manual shift, if needed)
* Perform at least 2-3 drive cycles if possible
* Let vehicle idle for about 5min

So after driving it (step 2), you should let it idle 5 mins, then repeat that whole thing 2-3 times?

Or after driving it like in step 2, you should drive it differently a bit, then do step 2 again, and do all that a few times, then finally let it idle 5 mins?
